10,000 nautical miles over 10 years - measuring, benchmarking, monitoring, reporting on exactly what is happening to our oceans in areas that are seldom if at all sampled. Areas which for over 70 years have been accepted as the indicator regions of our planet - CRITICAL scientific data collected and portrayed in near real time - at a CRUCIAL time. Without this how do we know that anything we are doing in terms of mitigating climate change is actually working? Our CEO, Explorer, Jim McNeill, explains "I'm someone who likes to do my homework properly and in September last year I led our Foundation Expedition in preparation for our Resolute Expeditions. It was all about finding out how to use the SV Linden for 10 years of scientific exploration." Do you want to be part of this crucial historic endeavour - following in the foot steps of early explorers but on a modern-day critical mission for climate change?

Studio Guests: Sara Wheeler, Author: The Magnetic North: Notes from the Arctic Circle, Renown British Biographer, and World Explorer, From London, United Kingdom (By Skype) ======================================================== This program features the extensive research and personal travels about the Arctic Zone by Sara Wheeler an esteemed British biographer, world traveler, and author. Sara's latest book The Magnetic North: Notes from the Arctic Circle covers two years of research and major travels across six nations of the Arctic Council while living on the very edge of nature's most life-threatening challenges. Sara will share her impressions about the Arctic, the earth's most rapidly changing climatic zone. The program will provide details about insights gained from indigenous tribal members, scientists, researchers, and off-spring of original settlers from the United States, Canada, Greenland, and Russia. As published in April, 2010 by the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. USA the melting of the northern polar ice has dramatically altered this once static geographic and oceanic region. It is responsible for new-found profitability and geostrategic relevance for all members of the Arctic Council and the world. Access to crude oil, natural gas, minerals, marine resources, and shortened transportation routes between Europe and Asia are becoming accessible and viable sources of profit due to rapid climate change. The report further states that the effects of climate change have launched the Arctic Circle to the forefront of geopolitical calculations, potentially transforming the region into a commercial hub fraught both with environmental concerns and complex challenges that have direct implications for Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden, the United States, and the newly autonomous country of Greenland. These signers of The Ottawa (Canada) Declaration in 1996 formally established the Arctic Council. This is an intergovernmental forum to promote cooperation, collaboration, and communications between those countries with physical claims on the Arctic along with representations by indigenous communities on mutual issues including sustainable development and environmental protection in the Arctic zone.

Five years ago a research expedition, MOSAIC, Arctic Drift, with 300 multidisciplinary scientists on board, set their ship drifting, stuck in the ice, starting the voyage north of Russia in the autumn, travelling with the ice through winter, passing just beside North pole and ending up on the coast of Greenland. The learnings about global warming were alarming. We need more research of this scale, not to study the problems, but the solutions. https://lnkd.in/dZqtg-fh

🌊🪸 It’s been a tough summer for our Reef. Following the US NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration's announcement yesterday that our oceans are experiencing the fourth global mass bleaching event, we’ve reached another devastating milestone. The Great Barrier Reef has suffered the worst summer on record, enduring cyclones, severe flooding, crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks and a mass coral bleaching event, an Australian Government report has confirmed. While the full extent of the mass bleaching event is not yet known, aerial surveys observed bleaching on 73% of surveyed reefs within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and 6% in the Torres Strait. The reports underscore what the science has been telling us for some time – coral reefs are on the frontline of climate change. Imagine this dire scenario: the Atlantic Ocean's sea currents which bring warm water to Europe collapses, making large swaths of the continent as cold as the Arctic Circle. This catastrophic collapse — along with the ruination of the Amazon rainforest and the melting of polar ice — is on track to actually happen if we continue along our current path of wanton destruction of the planet’s fragile web of life!!

Happy #WorldOceansDay! This year's United Nations World Oceans Day theme—Awaken New Depths—speaks to the enormous complexity of the water surrounding us and hints at its many unknown yet vital functions. In the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory tradition of pioneering ocean exploration and discovery, oceanographer and carbon cycle scientist Galen McKinley and her research group are quantifying how much carbon the ocean removes from the atmosphere—and how much it fluctuates—to better understand climate change. Read our latest briefing on Arctic and Antarctic sea ice. The update doesn’t reveal any record-breaking figures, but it does reveal that sea ice loss remains a serious issue. The Met Office, has a long history of Polar research, and is leading a new research programme in the Arctic region. The Advancing Arctic Capabilities programme brings together international partners to develop an improved understanding of what is happening to the region’s ice, ocean & atmosphere to support global climate resilience. The programme will deliver cutting-edge insights into Arctic weather patterns and ocean currents. This knowledge will be essential for everything from safe navigation to understanding the impact of climate change on a global scale. Working closely with many partners and countries, sharing data and expertise, the Programme is an international effort to ensure the security of research activities and make the best use of all available resources. https://lnkd.in/gH7uxnF2
