Introducing the concept of #CRL, ie #Certification Readiness Level, to complete - as said - the #TRL scale, ie #Technology Readiness Level but, very often also forgotten, #MRL ie #Manufacturability Readiness Level. Best ideas and technology are nothing, if its not (or hardly) manufacturable at affordable costs and with mastered manufacturing techniques, as its not only hard to make it commercially viable but also hard to certify ! In that sense, working with companies being really vertically integrated, from Design, #RAMTS* analysis and certification toward industrialisation, assembly, test and later, product support and #MRO (fueling the continuous improvments thanks RetEx) is KEY * #Reliability, #Availability, #Maintainability, #Testability and #SAFETY.

The small satellite (smallsat) industry is evolving with the emergence of advanced manufacturing mega factories, designed to support the growing demand for satellite constellations and defense needs. Airbus is at the forefront with its enhanced Arrow 450 platform, an upgrade from the Arrow 150 used in the OneWeb Gen1 constellation. This platform highlights a shift towards more capable smallsats in response to affordable launch options. However, the industry faces challenges of potential oversupply. The future of smallsats may rely on technological advancements and industry consolidation if production exceeds market demand.

Driving Aerospace Innovation: Insights from the 2024 ATI Conference This past week, our Aerospace, Defence and Space Practice Lead, Claire Gibson, had the privilege of attending the ATI Conference. Here are some of her key highlights from the event: ➡️ Sustainability and Supply Chain Transformation: The conversation around sustainability was front and center, with a focus on building a supply chain fit for the future. Safran UK's Managing Director shared exciting updates about their new Burnley site, which now includes an on-site bee project, highlighting the integration of ESG initiatives within aerospace manufacturing. ➡️ Advancing Zero-Carbon Emission Flight: Vertical Aerospace was awarded the "Shaping the Future" accolade for its significant strides towards zero-carbon emission flight, setting a strong example for industry-wide advancements in green aviation. ➡️ MRO & Data Maturity: Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO) remains an area in need of digital transformation, as highlighted by Tony Bell, RR Director of Engineering Services. The move away from paper-based processes by 2050 is on the horizon, but the need for knowledge sharing and best practices—particularly in data management—is more critical than ever. ➡️ AI and Efficiency: AI was a key topic of discussion, focusing on reducing the burden on skilled employees, minimizing human error, and preparing for recurring challenges. The push towards more AI-driven operations is something we’re excited to explore further in our own work. Thank you to the Aerospace Technology Institute team and all the participants for creating such a dynamic event.
