Since the start of my career in hotel management 21 years ago I have experienced the changes in our sector and the various challenges that came along. Today I can say that our number one challenge is human resources and I can see hotel services getting more and more dependent on automated systems. If we don't see any major changes I expect person to person service in hotels to become a luxury within the next decade.

Working at a resort in the hospitality industry offers numerous benefits that can be both personally and professionally rewarding: 1. **Diverse Learning Opportunities**: Resorts typically offer a range of services from lodging and dining to entertainment and recreation. Employees have the opportunity to gain experience in multiple areas, enhancing their skill sets and versatility. 2. **Networking**: With guests coming from various regions or even different countries, resort employees have the chance to network and create global connections. This can open doors to future opportunities both within and outside the hospitality sector. 3. **Cultural Exposure**: Interacting with a diverse clientele allows employees to gain cultural insights, understanding different traditions, customs, and perspectives. This broadens horizons and fosters personal growth. 4. **Teamwork & Collaboration**: Resort settings often require coordination across departments. This promotes teamwork and collaboration, teaching employees the value of inter-departmental cooperation. 5. **Career Progression**: Large resorts often have a hierarchy of roles, allowing employees to climb the career ladder. With hard work and dedication, there are clear paths to promotions and greater responsibilities. 6. **Benefits and Perks**: Many resorts offer perks like discounted or free stays, meals, and access to recreational facilities. These can lead to significant savings and a higher quality of life for employees. 7. **Beautiful Work Environments**: Resorts are often located in picturesque settings, whether they're by the beach, in the mountains, or amidst lush greenery. Working in such environments can contribute to a positive state of mind and overall well-being. 8. **Soft Skills Development**: Daily interactions with guests help employees develop crucial soft skills like communication, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence. 9. **Travel Opportunities**: International hotel chains or resorts sometimes offer transfer or exchange programs, allowing employees to work at different locations and experience new cultures. 10. **Stability**: The hospitality industry, especially in well-established resorts, tends to offer stable employment. While there may be seasonal fluctuations, these establishments often have a consistent flow of guests. The Art of Hospitality Working in the hospitality industry, whether in busy restaurants or luxurious hotels, is a balancing act between exhaustion and excitement. It requires long hours, boundless energy, and a continuous dedication to meeting the needs of others. The pressure to provide exceptional service, often within tight timeframes and with numerous tasks to juggle, can be overwhelming. However, amidst the demanding nature of the job, there is a sense of fulfillment. Creating moments of joy, seeing guests' faces light up with satisfaction as you surpass their expectations, is truly rewarding. The bonds formed with coworkers, the dynamic nature of guest interactions, and the gratification of contributing to memorable experiences all make for a fulfilling and unique career. While it presents challenges, the joy of working in hospitality serves as a powerful motivator in overcoming the inevitable hardships. My take on hospitality over the past years — Working in hospitality is a tough job, but it is also an absolute pleasure. It is a career path that offers challenges, rewards, and the potential for personal and professional growth. By embracing the human connection, honing service skills, and seizing opportunities, hospitality professionals make a difference in the lives of others while simultaneously enriching their own. Recently I was asked about how I started my career in hospitality and if I had any recommendations to share with someone considering this field of work. First think of the area of hospitality you wish to pursue. Do you want to work at a hotel, a convention & visitors bureau, an attraction, etc.? If you want to start at a hotel, you are in luck as hotels are everywhere and you can have the ability to move up in your career and to locations far and wide. Do you want to work in sales or operations of a hotel? Consider the hotel brands, as well as the actual hotel itself. Does the hotel have a unique feature that stands out above the rest? Be prepared to discuss how you can drive business & occupancy by showcasing (selling) to that feature, or strength. Know your competition and sell your property’s strengths, not their weaknesses.

Have you ever had a false perception of the purpose of a hotel and the staff working in a hotel? While growing up I had a false perception of hotel operations and their purpose due to how it was portrayed in movies. Even now some people still don't regard those who work in hotels. Joining this industry has enlightened me to have a better knowledge of what a hotel stands for. Hotels are established to provide accommodations, food and beverages, and other services such as recreational centers, Spa centers, event halls, and meeting rooms (depending on each standard). As we all know how accommodation and food are very important, they are part of the necessities of life. Hotels are in the business of providing a place of comfort where you get value for what you paid for. The hotel industry is one of the sectors that contribute to providing job opportunities for people and gives room for career growth; for instance, I've seen those who start as a room attendant and build their careers to become Housekeeping Managers. A hotel is a lifesaver for travelers and even those who are residents. Imagine the world without any establishment making provisions for accommodation. Proud to be part of this industry, building my career, and believing I reach the utmost top one day by God's grace. Never disregard anyone working in a hotel, the hotel industry is building professionals. 🌎 #hotelindustry #hospitalityindustry #hotelprofessionals #hospitalityprofessionals #accomodation #foodandbeverage #careergrowth #j5hotel #usahotels #ukhotels #ukhospitality #canadahospitality #dubaihotels #dubaihospitality #ghanahospitality #ghanahotels #nigeriahospitality #nigeriahotels #worldhospitality #globalhotels #globalhospitality #tourism #tourismindustry #hospitalityandtourismmanagement
