Embracing cultures ✨ Staff, clients, and community members came together for #WorldRefugeeDay across our offices in Boston and Lowell, M.A. and Manchester, N.H. We thank everyone who joined us in honoring the resilience and achievements of our clients and in celebrating our community's willingness to open their doors for those in need. In Boston, we marked the accomplishments of our #ESOL graduates 🎓 A big thank you to Monique Nguyen, Director of the Boston Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Advancement, who delivered a proclamation from the Mayor’s office in recognition of 100 years of welcoming and serving refugees and immigrants across the region, and to Boston City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune, who shared her story as the daughter of Haitian immigrants, and encouraged our clients to keep up the hard work in English and Haitian Creole. Afterwards the city officials, including City Council members Benjamin Weber and Edward Flynn toured the site, learned about our history from President and CEO Jeff Thielman, and heard from three of our clients. We are so grateful for their interest and support! The Lowell staff and clients kicked off the celebration with a bike ride led by the The Bike Connector who generously provided bikes to those in need. 🚴🌻 Then they gathered again for a potluck celebration, showcasing various cuisines, and decorated their countries' flags. The celebrations culminated with an inspiring event where we inducted five new members into the Lowell 100, a group of leaders who have made significant contributions to the city’s immigrant communities. We thank our former clients Majid Abdulhussien and Suad Mansour, Lowell Community Health Center's Metta Health Center Senior Director Sidney L. Liang, MPA, CHW, and Wade Rubenstein, The Bike Connector Founder and IINE Leadership Council member. All enjoyed food from around the world and a tasting from our generous partner and event sponsor The Starbucks Foundation. At Manchester, staff, volunteers, clients, and community members gathered at Brookside Congregational Church to celebrate our ESOL students and LNA program graduates, who have all displayed great determination and commitment. 🎊 Despite the heat, everyone enjoyed the food, children played in the bouncy castle, and clients won transportation passes and gift cards, thanks to a spinning wheel from AmeriCorps. 📸 Check out the pictures from our celebrations and please consider donating today to welcome and support refugees and immigrants in our communities: https://hubs.li/Q02Fbgdk0 #immigrantswelcome #refugeeswelcome #worldrefugeeday #refugeeswelcome #welcomerefugees #refugeeswelcomehere

🎤 “With growing concerns around housing, healthcare and the cost of living, people have increasingly felt a need to find a reason behind these systemic issues and newcomers, despite facing these same issues, have unwittingly found themselves to be a convenient scapegoat. This mounting frustration being lobbied against newcomers is as frightening as it is misplaced.” – Katie Crocker, AMSSA’s CEO 🏘️ AMSSA’s report “A Collaborative Vision for Newcomer Integration in British Columbia” addresses the critical roles that immigration and effective newcomer integration play in strengthening our communities economically and socially, while promoting informed public perception of immigration realities. 🤝 Learn more about inclusive community development! 🔗 Access the full report here: “A Collaborative Vision for Newcomer Integration in British Columbia” Report – AMSSA - https://bit.ly/3X09pM4 #BCVisionForNewcomers

Welcome to our Community Empowerment Initiative! Breaking Barriers: Bridging Generational Gaps for a Brighter Future At our initiative, we recognize the pressing challenges refugee families face due to limited education among parents. Our mission is to address the educational disparities that create a significant gap between parents and their children, leading to potential long-term consequences. Understanding the Issue: As children embark on their educational journey, a noticeable gap emerges between them and their parents. The lack of educational resources for parents can result in feelings of inadequacy, particularly in terms of knowledge and English communication skills. This gap can lead to misunderstandings, making it challenging for parents to connect with and monitor their children's activities. The consequences of this divide become even more apparent during the teenage and young adult years. Many teenagers and young adults may disrespect their parents as they attempt to assert their independence. This often stems from the parents' attempts to control unacceptable behaviors, exacerbating the generational divide. The Ripple Effect: If we address this gap, we can avoid facing more severe issues in the future. Post-high school, some graduates find themselves discouraged from pursuing higher education. Parents, burdened by societal expectations, may push their children into full-time jobs to support the family financially, hindering their academic pursuits and personal growth. The pressure on the eldest to start earning immediately after high school is immense for families with multiple children. This cycle perpetuates a scenario where education takes a backseat, leading to a potential crisis in the younger generation's mental health. Additionally, many young girls, deprived of a supportive environment at home, may succumb to mental depression and aggression. Our Commitment: Our initiative is committed to breaking this cycle and fostering a supportive environment for all community members. We believe education is a fundamental right and a pathway to a brighter future. We aim to empower parents and children through targeted programs, resources, and advocacy. How You Can Help: Volunteer: Join our team of volunteers dedicated to bridging the educational gap within refugee families. Donate: Please contribute to our initiatives and help us provide educational resources to parents and children in need. Spread Awareness: Share our mission with your community, raising awareness about the importance of education and breaking generational barriers. Together, We Can Make a Difference! Join us in our mission to empower refugee families, break educational barriers, and create a future where everyone can thrive. Together, let's build a community where education is a beacon of hope and a pathway to success for future generations. Empower. Educate. Elevate.

Philadelphia’s Immigrants A series on the traits and impact of growing population Last week The Pew Charitable Trusts, with the support of the The Welcoming Center, Anuj Gupta, began a series of presentation on the growth and challenges of the city’s immigrant population to inform policy makers and the general public. According to Pew, over the past three decades, Philadelphia has received an influx of immigrants at a level not seen during the last century in contrast to the decline of the city’s native-born rates. From 2000 to 2022, the city’s foreign born population increased by 109,400, while the native-born numbers went down by 59,700. In the early 2000s, the Philadelphia metropolitan area went from a low-immigration area to one of the nine “reemerging entrance gates,” with arrivals similar to those a century earlier, according to the Brookins Institution. Even though Philadelphia is not yet one of the top U.S destinations for foreign-born people, the city’s immigrant population has grown by 80% since 2000 and it reached to 246,600, a level that was previously achieved in the 1940s. At the event, Patrick Clancy from Philadelphia Works, was very clear about the upcoming challenge, “we have to make sure immigrants have access to ELS training.” Margaret O'Sullivan agreed. @Maridarlyn Gonzalez, Senior Associate, y @Thomas Ginsberg, Senior Officer from Philadelphia Research and Policy Initiatiave didn’t only present interesting numbers, but they also honored their roots, reminding us that we are all immigrants. 2PuntosPlatform is a hyperlocal Philadelphia media outlet covering important issues for the Latine community thanks to the support of Independence Public Media Foundation Philadelphia 2024. ✍ Emma Restrepo 📝 Valeria Uribe 🔎 Valeria Uribe 📽 Pablo Mantilla #event #philadelphia #transformed #evolution #population #2PuntosLocalNews #hyperlocalmedia #2PPlt

St. Lucia's #citizenship program continues to gain momentum year after year, something that can be attributed to cost-effectiveness and efficient processing. In the FY 2021-2022, the citizenship unit received 583 applications, a 52% year-on-year increase. Some 54% of the applicants preferred to donate to the government fund. Under this option, it is one of the most cost-effective citizenship programs for single applicants. Since the inception of the program in 2016, St. Lucia has granted citizenship to 1,304 main applicants. The origin of the applicants has been quite diverse - from North America to Africa to the Far East. One of the things I personally like about this program is that, unlike some other programs, St. Lucia has applied robust due diligence standards from the beginning. The collective number of passports issued is also low compared to other programs. The program does have limitations, though. For example, citizenship can't be passed on to future generations automatically. This is a legislative issue and can't be resolved unless a new legislation is passed. That said, the 'Helen of the West Indies' and the land of Pitons continue to attract entrepreneurs and aspiring global citizens from different parts of the world. Passionate Nonprofit Leader | Building Collective Impact Through Ethical, Equity-driven, and Empowering Fundraising Strategies
There is a lot to fear in this article. Increasing attacks on immigrant rights, politics getting in the way of human services, and a distinct philanthropic silence in situations where we normally see a major response. But there is also a lot to believe in, and I want to share these messages of hope: "As a longtime grant maker on immigrant rights, I’ve seen firsthand the victories the immigrant justice movement has achieved over the past two decades. This is no time to fold. Instead, sustained philanthropic investment is needed to build on these successes." "Increased investments in local groups that fight for immigrant justice can have ripple effects, including expanding leadership diversity in the broader nonprofit world." It is my honor to work every day for an immigrant-serving organization, and to see the ways that this work touches so many intersections in our clients' lives. If you have the power to influence personal and institutional giving, I hope you will consider learning more about organizations that support immigrant communities and immigrant justice.
