We've read the news so you don't have to. Here's the weekly insight into sustainable fashion news from Lydia Brearley at enkel #sustainablefashion #circularfashion #enkel
What's been happening in sustainable fashion this week? ⬇ 1) Last week, The Material Innovation Initiative (MII) announced its closure. Since it founded in 2019, MII has facilitated over $2 billion in investments, supporting innovators to develop next-gen materials to replace animal-based products in fashion and other industries. 2) Meanwhile, in material news, JACK & JONES (part of BESTSELLER), have launched their latest collection with Infinited Fiber Company - a pair of cargo pants crafted using 40% INFINNA™ fiber, which is derived from recycled textile waste, and 60% in-conversion cotton*. This is the second product of the collaboration between the brands, following the successful launch of jeans made with INFINNA™ in 2023. *"In-conversion cotton" refers to cotton that is grown by farmers transitioning from conventional to organic farming practices. This transitional period usually lasts for about three years, during which the farmers adopt organic methods, such as avoiding synthetic fertilisers and pesticides. Although the cotton is not yet fully certified as organic, it is grown using the same principles. The "in-conversion" label helps support these farmers by giving them recognition and access to markets during this transition, as they don't yet benefit from the premium prices of fully certified organic cotton. 3) Coachtopia (by Coach) has introduced instant resale, powered by EON and in partnership with Poshmark, enabling customers to resell their Coachtopia products on Poshmark with a single click, using the items digital ID. 4) In supply chain news, garment workers in Cambodia have been granted a small increase in their minimum wage - from $204 to $208 per month - by the county's National Council of Minimum Wage (NCMW) 5) The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) have published a guide to help fashion businesses stay on the right side of consumer law when it comes to making sustainability claims about their products. 6) Meanwhile, the CMA have also written to 17 'well-known' UK fashion brands to advise them to review how they market their sustainability claims amid ongoing crackdowns on greenwashing. Incoming regulations mean that the CMA will soon have the authority to fine companies up to 10% of their global revenue if they break consumer law. 7) Congratulations to Mulberry England on joining the B Lab community and achieving B Corp Status with 87.1 points. 8) Reskinned have partnered with ACT UK to take back clothes, shoes and accessories from ANY brand in ANY condition. The initiative is led by the UKFT Association, making it easier for everyone to recycle waste textiles and a goal to turn it into valuable resources for recycling 👏 Have a great week! As a representative of Ethik Brands, a factory dedicated to authentic and impactful sustainability practices, I want to address the pervasive issue of greenwashing in the fashion industry highlighted in the recent LinkedIn post. Greenwashing, where brands falsely portray their products as environmentally friendly, indeed breeds consumer confusion and frustration. It’s disheartening that terms like "eco-friendly," "sustainable," and "vegan leather" have become marketing buzzwords, often devoid of real environmental benefit. As noted, the existence of fast fashion's "conscious collections" raises valid concerns about the ethicality of their other lines. The term "vegan leather," often merely a euphemism for plastic, further exacerbates the issue, misleading consumers about its true environmental impact. At Ethik Brands, we firmly believe that genuine sustainability should be transparent and accountable. Here’s how we strive to make a real difference: 1. Water-Saving Techniques: We’ve invested heavily in technology to significantly reduce water usage in our production processes. Unlike vague claims, our methods are measurable and verifiable. 2. Recycled Materials: Our commitment extends to using high-quality recycled materials, reducing waste and promoting a circular economy. 3. Reduced Carbon Footprint: By optimizing our supply chains and leveraging renewable energy sources, we minimize our carbon emissions, providing a clear environmental benefit. 4. Certifications and Standards: We adhere to strict certifications and production standards, ensuring that our products meet rigorous environmental and ethical criteria. This is not just about ticking boxes but about truly making a positive impact. This is not easy but we stand committed to continuing to reinvest in our efforts to be better. 5. Affordable Ethical Fashion: We believe that sustainability should not come at an exorbitant cost. By integrating advanced technologies, we can offer high-quality, eco-friendly fashion at competitive prices, making sustainable choices accessible to more consumers. Consumers deserve to know the true impact of their purchases, and brands must rise to this challenge with honesty and integrity. Our mission at Ethik Brands is to simplify this process for consumers, ensuring that when they choose our products, they are genuinely contributing to a more sustainable future. People continue to shop new and fast fashion, and we need to meet them where they are in order to create real change. Brands and Creators - your choices matter, and together, we can create a fashion industry that is genuinely committed to the environment and ethical practices we know will make a difference if we all get onboard. Empowering youth-led startups, social enterprises, and social champions with mentorship, investment, and strategic guidance.
EU is leading the way in sustainability fashion regulations, as self regulation is phased out. Exporters from Pakistan should see the impact of this in their supply chains today. "Product design: Up to 80 percent of a product’s environmental impact is determined in the design phase and is baked into materials and dyes. The EU’s flagship Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), set to come into full effect by 2025, sets minimum design standards for all individual products sold within the EU. This includes requirements around recyclability, durability, reusability, repairability and use of hazardous substances. Digital product passports that collect and share this information with consumers are expected to become required by law." #fastfashion #sustainability #circularity #circularfashion #wastemanagement #landfills #esgreporting #greenwashing #emissionreduction

** Fashion’s New Sustainability Rules for 2024 ** Long report… however what perhaps nails it as an Exec summary for SELF REGULATION, this is what ‘success’ looks like… Quoting directly from this article: “Waste management: Less than 1 percent of fashion textiles are recycled and a truckload of products are sent to landfill or incinerated somewhere in the world every second.” It will be interesting to see if these new regulations are fit for purpose. For the record, I’m an advocate for a ‘waste tax’ to tackle overconsumption and accelerate investment into more sustainable infrastructure. As well as clear up the waste already polluting the planet. #sustainable #fashion #sustainabilitymatters

Interesting article reflecting on the 2024 priorities in sustainability in fashion. All seems urgent and important! 🤪 The big takeaway for me is a more specific regulatory landscape and hopefully a more unified perspective at EU level and not at single country level.

I was recently featured in an ELLE Magazine article by Angela Tafoya-Bailey about common terms and standardizations in sustainable fashion. This is something we’ve been working on creating resources around at Beaker. “Transparency is huge. People are more intentional about where they put their dollars and are aware of greenwashing tactics. If it’s hidden in the depths of the website, that’s not transparent.” “Words like ‘green’ or ‘eco-friendly’ are not regulated. It’s important to look at certifications because they have a standardization. You have to meet a certain mark. So, when reviewing a product that touts itself as ‘organic’ or ‘sustainable,’ you should see this claim accompanied by the third-party verification. All certifications should have a tag that includes the certification body name and reference code.” What did you learn about sustainable fashion terminology? Are there any other terms to include? #Earth #Sustainability #sustianable #sustainablefashin #fashion #greenwashing #organic #standard #ecofriendly #green #standard #certfication. #earthday #green #slowfashion #ecofriendly
