This is Caroline! Caroline did her PhD at DTU, while strongly impacting PhD Association DTU as vice-chair. During that time, PhD Association DTU was on the border of closing down, as the Covid times made it very difficult to run and only very few people knew about its existence. Caroline was one of the people that changed that. When Caroline joined the board, below 20 people showed up at the general assembly. By the end of Carolines involvement in the board, 100 did. Of course, she was not alone in this development, but she was a major factor. While boosting PhD Association DTU, Caroline conducted research in one of the most important areas for the current civilization: Ways to assess and implement the United Nations sustainability goals (SDGs) across different scales. As far as we understand, this means that Caroline tried to quantify the fulfilment of the SDGs, to make them more concrete and applicable at different scales, such that the path to reach them will become clear. Now Caroline is a PostDoc at DTU - Technical University of Denmark, and we are thrilled to see her continue her research! #PhDTU #Research #PostDOCDTU #Sustainability #Education

Call for papers - apply before June 30th! You still have time to submit your paper for the two following calls: 📚 Educating for Societal Transitions / Higher Education Research & Development: Contributions are welcome that engage with practices and theories that address the challenges of navigating complexity and change in these uncertain times. This call emphasises that universities cannot work in isolation but must engage collaboratively with other sectors of society. Importantly, it underscores a broader commitment to societal futures that goes beyond economic concerns, challenging the notion that the purpose of university education is to meet industry needs. 🔗 More information: https://lnkd.in/g7r8HTH5 🛤 Co-Creating Transdisciplinary Research and Learning for Transformative Socio-Environmental Change / Journal of Integrative Environmental Sciences: The goal of this collection is to explore how inter- and transdisciplinary learning and research help approach the complexities of today. When, how, with whom, and even why we should integrate knowledge to address environmental challenges are not always clear. What are the challenges or possibilities with inter- and transdisciplinary processes for improving biodiversity, environmental justice, and achieving Sustainable Development Goals? 🔗 More information: https://lnkd.in/gPpqM4zZ

✨ Check out the newest Journal Club post from David Phipps (he/him/his) on our RIC website! ✨ "Societal impact as a buzz word is high on the agenda of policy-makers around the world. Often, the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) is cited as the initiator of making the societal impact of research relevant and visible. Equally often, it is said that in Switzerland societal impact is not yet considered in higher education policy. In this paper, I show that both claims are as wrong as they are common." Are you interested in learning more about the funding landscape for social science research in the UK? Our recently published report draws largely on published annual Higher Education Statistics Authority (HESA) research funding data between 2013/14 and 2021/22, to document the scale and trends in research funding for the social sciences across UK higher education. From analysing the data available, the report shows that in 2021/22 the social sciences sector received 8.3% of the total research funding reported by UK universities, in comparison to the medical and biological sciences sector which received 55% and the STEM sector which received 33%. Our Chief Executive, Dr Rita Gardner, said, “Social science research is fundamental to understanding and helping to mitigate many of the economic, social, place-based and environmental challenges we face in the UK, especially in terms of delivering vital insights to many critical areas of public policy. Yet in 2021/22 the social sciences sector received 8.3% of the total research funding reported by UK universities. We urge the UK Government and UKRI to review the funding of social science research with a view to narrowing the gap with the medical and biological sciences and STEM to release more of the sector’s potential in addressing many of the societal challenges we face at a local, regional, national and global scale.” Read the full report ➡ https://lnkd.in/eNyB74sW #socialsciences #researchfunding

'This seminar will add impetus to the implementation of the national policy approach on research for policy being advanced by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science. It has a particular focus on universities themselves - the main aim of this seminar is to advance consideration of the developments both within and between universities with a view to identifying what approaches and actions that they might take to be more effective in seeking to enhance the impact of research on public policy. The seminar will include a setting of the national policy scene and will give an overview of relevant national and international developments. It will then have 2 case studies – one from the University of Liverpool and one from University College Dublin – to look at the steps being taken and the issues and challenges arising. The seminar will conclude with a panel and wider discussion. The seminar will be of interest for those within the university community working to advance research for policy. It will also be relevant to those funding research activities and to policy-makers working with researchers or seeking to do so.' https://lnkd.in/ejpdqQFn
