An overview of the discussion we had at the 8th European Migration Forum was just published. I had a great experience reporting and reflecting on the discussion in the final panel of the forum, with the support of Jakub Kajtman and Tina Zournatzi. The main point in my intervention was focused on: 💡accountability for the media and politicians. 💡meaningful participation of migrants and refugees, particularly women, in decision and policy-making 💡the importance of creating touch points for community building in fighting stereotypes and harmful narratives, reiterating that the future of the EU is local. #LocalfEUture How could we change the narrative on migration in the age of polarisation and disinformation? "European media should prioritise accurate, comprehensive, transparent and accountable reporting on migrants and migration issues. Language matters: people are not "illegal". Care must be taken to use proper language and provide context so as to fight harmful, polarising and populist narratives and, in so doing, tell stories that challenge stereotypes rather than reinforce them. Above all, it is important to give migrants and those from migrant backgrounds a louder voice in media because "who we don't see shapes the narrative". It is also key to take a multidimensional approach to storytelling and acknowledge the role of social media in conveying positive and negative stories about migration and harnessing its power. Media literacy, communication campaigns and education (especially for young people) are needed to combat stereotypes." #migration #eupact #futureeu #participation #communitybuilding

Communication is key, but language differences can be a significant obstacle. 3.⁠ ⁠Financial Struggles. Building a stable financial foundation in a new environment takes time and effort. 4.⁠ ⁠Discrimination. Sadly, some migrants face discrimination, battling stereotypes and prejudices. But here's the truth: Migrants are resilient. Let's build a community of support. Together, we can create awareness and foster empathy.

AER Engages in High-Level Dialogue on Migration and Integration Policies at EU Week of Regions and Cities. 🤝 On 9 October, AER President Albert Castellanos Maduell and Secretary General Vania Freitas, and Lupe Moreno, Deputy Director General of Migration and Asylum at the Generalitat de Catalunya, met with Beate Gminder, Acting Director General of DG Migration and Home Affairs at the European Commission. ➡ The discussion centered on the crucial role regions play in EU migration and integration policies. Language barriers exacerbate that precarity, especially when it comes to critical issues like access to healthcare or asylum. A lack of information available in languages other than the host country can affect people’s ability to access appropriate information; in healthcare, people are unlikely to receive an accurate or timely diagnosis. For asylum claims, if the people processing your asylum case cannot find an interpreter who speaks your language, your asylum case is automatically rejected. It's time to harness technology to bridge these gaps and create a more inclusive world. Contributor Yannick Mutombo on how Refugee 613 | Réfugié 613 is bridging information gaps for newcomers to counter the spread of disinformation. Canada is currently operating on its most ambitious immigration targets ever, aiming for 500,000 arrivals in 2025.
