Recently, the American Nurses Foundation released the results of its fourth #MentalHealth and wellness survey to shed light on where the nursing profession is today. As we continue to recover from the pandemic, it's important that we have an accurate understanding of where nurses are at and what they need to succeed. Here are some important findings from the report: - Nurse turnover is still above pre-pandemic levels. This is mainly due to insufficient staffing, feeling unvalued by their organization, and inadequate compensation. - 56% of nurses are experiencing #burnout, including emotional exhaustion, and 64% say they feel “a great deal of stress because of their job.” - 2/3 of nurses who said they are suffering mental anguish or toxic emotions are either not seeking or not receiving mental health support. These findings prove that we still have a lot of work to do to give nurses the support they need to remain happy, healthy, and successful. But with the #NewYear around the corner, we should use this as an opportunity to revisit our strategies once again to make 2024 a better year for #healthcare all around.

Addressing and mitigating nurse burnout is crucial for retaining experienced and skilled healthcare professionals. We see it contributing to high turnover rates and a shortage of qualified staff. When nurses are fatigued and emotionally drained, their ability to make critical decisions and provide compassionate care diminishes, compromising patient safety in some instances. It's also associated with increased healthcare costs - higher rates of absenteeism, medical errors, and reduced overall efficiency. As the nursing profession itself is feeling the effects of "long COVID," "all hands on deck" is an understatement. The outlook is overwhelming and we may seem outnumbered, but we must overcome. We will overcome. We are bringing our energy and commitment to an individual-level support to improve empowerment, gratitude, and other positive emotions in the profession. HeartMyCare is a mobile app we are proudly introducing in December leveraging the nurse-patient relationship where a positive feedback loop can empower the nurse and patient simultaneously. Nurses will feel more valued when they are able to instantaneously connect the care they provide with its impact on the patient. As mentioned in the article, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. But by combing the resolve of all, we can thrive again. We will thrive again.

The operating model needs to change. In collaboration with the American Nurses Foundation, a team of my McKinsey colleagues conducted an extensive survey of over 7,000 nurses. Our objective? Fifty-six percent of nurses report experiencing burnout, 64% attribute feelings of stress to their job, and 39% are considering an exit from their role within the next six months — that's according to the American Nurses Foundation’s fourth annual survey of #nurse wellness published Nov. 7. Of particular interest is the fact that approximately 43% of the responses touched on some form of #workplaceviolence. This is an issue we really must focus on, as our caregivers are experiencing burnout and leaving the healthcare sector. The essence of the matter is clear: action is imperative. Approximately 40% of surveyed nurses expressed a lack of control over their workload, characterizing their day-to-day tasks as hectic or intense. Compounding the issue, two-thirds of nurses experiencing mental anguish or toxic emotions either do not seek or do not receive mental health support. Additionally, 56% of these individuals note the presence of stigma within the healthcare provider community associated with seeking mental health care. Healthcare staffing is a critical issue, and a new study suggests that nurses prioritize work-life balance when choosing or staying in a job. According to the study, nurses feel overwhelmed and stressed due to demanding workloads and long hours. Work-life balance emerges as a significant factor influencing job satisfaction and retention. To improve nurse well-being and work-life balance, healthcare facilities need to prioritize strategies such as offering flexible scheduling, adequate staffing levels, and mental health resources. These steps can contribute to a more positive work environment and improved retention. According to a recent survey, 56% of U.S. nurses are experiencing burnout, including emotional exhaustion, and 64% say they feel “a great deal of stress because of their job.” The survey also identified the top 15 contributors to their feelings of burnout, including not enough staff, patient load, and difficult leadership.
