In the past few years, nurses' mental health has shown modest improvements each year since 2020 according to the annual Trusted mental health surveys. When we dug into the specific variables that nurses said negatively impacted mental health in 2023, nursing staff shortages (74%) and nurse staffing levels (62%) topped the list. Many health systems have already started to take on the challenge to evolve the approach to staffing in 2023. Recently, the American Nurses Foundation released the results of its fourth #MentalHealth and wellness survey to shed light on where the nursing profession is today. As we continue to recover from the pandemic, it's important that we have an accurate understanding of where nurses are at and what they need to succeed. Here are some important findings from the report: - Nurse turnover is still above pre-pandemic levels. This is mainly due to insufficient staffing, feeling unvalued by their organization, and inadequate compensation. - 56% of nurses are experiencing #burnout, including emotional exhaustion, and 64% say they feel “a great deal of stress because of their job.” - 2/3 of nurses who said they are suffering mental anguish or toxic emotions are either not seeking or not receiving mental health support. These findings prove that we still have a lot of work to do to give nurses the support they need to remain happy, healthy, and successful. But with the #NewYear around the corner, we should use this as an opportunity to revisit our strategies once again to make 2024 a better year for #healthcare all around.

Fifty-six percent of nurses report experiencing burnout, 64% attribute feelings of stress to their job, and 39% are considering an exit from their role within the next six months — that's according to the American Nurses Foundation’s fourth annual survey of #nurse wellness published Nov. 7. Of particular interest is the fact that approximately 43% of the responses touched on some form of #workplaceviolence. This is an issue we really must focus on, as our caregivers are experiencing burnout and leaving the healthcare sector. Keep the conversations going... How can we expect our community of nurses to feel supported, safe, and valued if they fear losing their license for seeking help? Roughly 1 in 5 (19%) cite a lack of knowledge or resources as reasons for not seeking help, or concerns about losing their job or having their colleagues find out. Ending the stigma surrounding nurse mental health is a decade-long systemic problem that has persisted through each generation of the workforce. Shifting the paradigm on mental health regarding licensure and state boards will not solve the complexities of what the acute care environment is doing to our nurses... but it's a start. A big shout-out to J. Corey Feist, JD, MBA and the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes' Foundation for continuing this dialogue, raising awareness, and beginning to remove the barriers to nurses safely addressing their mental health. Let's work together to create a culture where seeking help is encouraged, where resources are readily available, and where nurses feel supported in prioritizing their mental well-being. 💔 If it can break the individual... then the system will eventually break! The operating model needs to change. One of McKinsey’s key suggestions to combating the challenges that nurses face is noted in the study: “In addition to addressing workload challenges, employers could provide flexible work options—for example, in shift length, start time, shift commitments, and virtual activities—to better enable employees to recharge from high levels of demands and to reduce conflicts with demands outside of work.” #gigeconomy #gignursing #futureofnursing #myhealthgig

Addressing and mitigating nurse burnout is crucial for retaining experienced and skilled healthcare professionals. We see it contributing to high turnover rates and a shortage of qualified staff. When nurses are fatigued and emotionally drained, their ability to make critical decisions and provide compassionate care diminishes, compromising patient safety in some instances. It's also associated with increased healthcare costs - higher rates of absenteeism, medical errors, and reduced overall efficiency.
