Celebrating the Success of IHB's Native Youth Health Fair and Back-to-School Event Yesterday at the Indian Health Board's Native Youth Health Fair and Back-to-School event, we had over 170 attendees and more than 50 children receive back-to-school checkups! Highlights included hoop dancing led by the Sampson Brothers, IHB's Big Drum group with Freddie LoneEagle, and musical expression supported by Rock the Rez. Our dedicated IHB teams from Diabetes, C&S, IBH, DVP, MNSure, and Sexual Health did a great job with health education, fun activities and bringing in the resources--15 community organizations contributing to the event with special thanks to Jellycat, Seward Co-op, Bellweather Media and others for generous donations. Additionally, we're grateful to Make Voting A Tradition (MVAT) for empowering Native voices in elections, and a special thanks to KARE11 and Samie Solina for highlighting this important work. 🎥 Check out the full news coverage by Samie Solina here: https://lnkd.in/ggxrW9BZ #MyIHB #HealthFair #MakeVotingATradition

Research is showing a climb in poverty and food insecurity among the nation's youngest residents. Meanwhile, WIC funding continues to be cut, this year with a drastic cut of $185 million to their budget. This would force an additional reduction in the enhanced fruit and vegetables program that provides incentives and additional stipends for fresh produce. Funding is essential for these programs to flourish and to promote preventative measures in fighting chronic disease-- which, in the long run, will save money for insurance companies. By continuing to reduce funding for these programs, we are going to see an increase in food insecurity and chronic diseases starting at a very young age.
#WIC needs increased funding from Congress. "folks have been working really hard to increase caseload. We’re seeing that increase happen now, but we just don’t have sufficient funding.” Read more from Georgia Machell, NWA Interim President & CEO on CNN: https://lnkd.in/dF7ANkUk

Happy National Public Health Week! Monday's theme of civic engagement emphasizes taking action to identify and address issues that impact our community's health. Civic engagement encompasses a range of activities, including voting, ensuring neighborhood safety, connecting with community members, seeking input, and more. To become more civically engaged, consider the following: Vote: It's a powerful way to support and advocate for your community. Voting reflects your values and priorities. Did you know that voter turnout in Cerro Gordo County was 75.24% in the 2020 general election, but only 54.59% in 2022? Learn about policies, campaigns, and volunteer opportunities: Understanding these aspects can help you understand their impact on your community. Seek input from others: Listening to the community is crucial for public health professionals. Data may show one thing, but hearing directly from the community can reveal different needs and priorities. Happy #NPHW to all!

In 2023, Governor Murphy of NJ signed into law a requirement for schools in the state to offer free period products. ❣ The 2025 fiscal year budget for New Jersey was released and we are thrilled to see a $3.5M appropriation request for the Menstrual Products School Reimbursement Program. We are not at the finish line yet. Revenues are expected to be down and therefore budget negotiations are expected to be intense. 🔴 Looking for grassroots organizations to get involved in advocacy? GIRLS HELPING GIRLS. PERIOD. by Elise Warner Joy and Equality, Period. NJ by Anjali Mehrotra are phenomenal groups to join. Here's a link to the budget document. It has been a professional dream come true to work for a company that cares so deeply about maternal care and well-being. Willow was founded to provide breastfeeding moms with a more liberating, more convenient and more flexible pumping experience. And every day since the introduction of the first wearable breast pump, Willow has been committed to making motherhood better. Unfortunately, by most measures, motherhood in America is not actually getting better. How did the greatest country in the world become the ONLY developed country in the world without universal paid family leave? How did we manage to go backwards with rising maternal mortality rates? How did we end up with childcare costs now exceeding housing costs (in every single state)!?! Is it that surprising Americans are opting out of parenthood and driving the biggest drop in the U.S. birthrate in over 50 years? Like so many other working moms, I'm fed up and I'm fired up. The bad news is women in America are underrepresented and underserved. The good news is women in America hold the majority of our country's spending and voting power. Together, we have the power to make motherhood better. I'm thrilled to add my personal support to the partnership between Chamber of Mothers and Willow Innovations, Inc. in their crusade to improve the maternal experience in America. If you are a mom, have a mom, love a mom, or love a girl that might one day become a mom, PLEASE take a moment to consider supporting candidates, at every level of government, that support BI-PARTISAN legislative solutions to the issues impacting a majority of American families: paid family leave, affordable childcare and maternal health. There has never been a more critical time to #votelikeamother 🗳 If you're shaking your head and thinking 'our government can't afford all of this', please consider the impact of Federal, State and Local policies that demand a majority of American women sacrifice their mental and physical well-being, along with their financial freedom and security, to become a mother 🤔. I think the more logical conclusion is that we can't really afford NOT to make motherhood better.
Willow was built on the belief that moms deserve better — not just when it comes to feeding, but at so many points along their postpartum and parenting journeys. We're incredibly proud to announce our partnership with Chamber of Mothers to further a shared mission: improving the maternal experience in America. A nonpartisan 501(c)(3), Chamber of Mothers is committed to uniting America's 85 million moms to harness their power for progress. Focusing on paid family leave, affordable childcare, and maternal health support, they are creating a national motherhood coalition to enact change on the local, state, and federal levels. Why? 25% of mothers are back at work just two weeks after giving birth. The average cost of childcare for two kids exceeds the average cost of housing in all 50 states. The U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate of any developed nation, and 84% of those deaths are preventable. If you're as fed up and fired up as we are, you can get involved and vote like a mother this fall. These issues are on the ballot! Text MOTHER to 26797 to check your registration status and access detailed ballot and polling information. *Produced and Created by: Affinitiv Advertising Voiceover: annie bacon, recording artist and Programs and Community Manager of Chamber of Mothers.
