Our latest paper entitled "A Tricycle Model to Accurately Control an Autonomous Racecar with Locked Differential" has been published in the proceedings of the 2023 IEEE 11th International Conference on Systems and Control (ICSC). IEEE Explore Link https://lnkd.in/dZu-dPrH Arxiv Preprint https://lnkd.in/d46swKBG In this paper, we describe the control method used by Unimore Racing team during the Indy Autonomous Challenge at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza F1 track. In particular, we presented a novel formulation to model the effects of the locked differential describing how we integrated it into a Model Predictive Controller achieving highly accurate path tracking error. A preliminary version of the solution has been tested on a real autonomous racecar (the Dallara AV-21) showing the advantage of our tricycle model compared to the more classical single-track model. After final adjustments, we tested it also in a high-fidelity multi-body simulator performing close to the tire limits while tracking the path with a maximum peak error of 20cm. Simply wow to TUM. Last year I had an opportunity to work in a Machine Learning regression project with F1 racing data to predict the race results. My part was to analyze the tire (wheel) data and therefore, to analyze how a simple tire design and race track makes a huge impact into the race results. 🏎️ Since 2021 The Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC), presented by Bridgestone, has been setting records and driving the future of autonomous racing, with teams from top universities competing globally. At Goodwood, they aim to set a new autonomous world record, demonstrating the potential of AI-driven vehicles. The IAC has been a trailblazer in autonomous racing, setting a remarkable land speed record of 192.2 mph! This year’s event highlighted the world’s fastest autonomous racecar, the AV-24, as it tackled the iconic Goodwood Hillclimb. 🏎️ Developed with a Dallara chassis from the Indy NXT series and cutting-edge tech, the AV-24 was piloted by the PoliMOVE Autonomous Racing Team-MSU team from Politecnico di Milano and Michigan State University, with support from the Unimore Racing team from Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia. This event marks IAC’s UK debut, promising a unique challenge and an exciting showcase of innovation.
