World Refugee Day on June 20th is designed to celebrate and honour refugees from around the world. The day aims to recognise the strength of the refugees who have fled the conflict and persecution of their country in hope of finding sanctuary and living a better life. This Day builds the concept of understanding for their plight which shows one's resilience and courage in the rebuilding of their future. This is an opportunity for everyone to experience, understand and celebrate the rich diversity of the communities of refugees. A refugee is an individual who leaves their country due to the ramifications of war, conflict persecutions and violence that they have faced within their home country. Through undertaking the process of crossing international borders, some refugees are often found to leave everything behind carrying only the minimal clothing and possessions; with the plan to find safety and haven in a different country. Refugees play a role in the globe as when they are positioned to have access to the legal employment opportunities in their host country, they are able to utilises their knowledge to assist in filling the gap of a country's labour market. Let’s challenge ourselves, and others, to join them, in the aims to receive and support refugees in our schools, neighbourhoods, and workplaces no matter where we are. Let’s support refugees all over the world, and show people that we must stand with them in their plight, and honour the courage, strength and determination of millions of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homeland though threat of persecution, conflict and violence, looking for the promise of a better life. #internationalrefugeeday #refugees #humanity #crossingborders

On June 20th, World Refugee Day celebrated the resilience of refugees worldwide. This was exploring their (Refugees') challenges, triumphs, and future under the theme 'In Solidarity With Refugees.' Mr. Charles Bafaki from the Office of the Prime Minister highlighted, "There are people in Uganda who are not citizens and they are not necessarily refugees unless they have sought asylum and been documented." He further pointed out, "You have situations in Europe and Asia, such as Ukraine, which are currently producing new refugees. While originally seen as an issue affecting African countries, it has now become a global issue. Refugees can emerge anywhere." John Mary Kisembo, Project Director at Jesuit Refugee Service, expressed concerns about the increasing number of refugees; "If they are self-settled, they must compete with nationals in education among others. A significant percentage of them are non-English speakers, which presents a major challenge." However, he also emphasized the positive outcomes of collaborative efforts; "As partners, with the support of the government, there have been successful language adoption programs that enable refugees to effectively communicate with the local community. This initiative fosters peaceful coexistence and helps meet their needs." The discussions and insights shared on World Refugee Day emphasized the importance of solidarity and support for refugees globally. Let's continue to work together to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all. #WorldRefugeeDay2024 #WorldRefugeeWeek

Great read: In every large-scale refugee situation, some return, others do not. From the end of the Cold War in 1991 to 2022 about 30 million refugees returned to their countries of origin, with the pace of returns slowing down over time. On the path to the Global Refugee Forum.

Today, June 20th, is World Refugee Day. World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. It falls each year on June 20 and shines a light on the rights, needs, and dreams of those forced to flee. There are about 2.3 million refugees from South Sudan; most of them are in Uganda, which hosts nearly 41 percent of all refugees from South Sudan. Deteriorating conditions have been pushing the South Sudanese population to emigrate. South Sudan is also hosting 464,738 refugees from other countries and thousands of internally displaced persons and asylum seekers, according to UNHCR. A new Save the Children International analysis shows 14 top refugee-hosting countries paid over US$23 billion in external debt interest in 2020. That’s enough to educate all refugee children in low- & middle-income countries for nearly 5 years. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dqhXRdbV #ThePriceofHope alongside #WorldRefugeeDay.

On World Refugee Day, let's take a moment to reflect on the increasing number of refugees worldwide. According to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency , the global number of refugees has risen by 7% this year, reaching 43.4 million people. This includes 31.6 million refugees and individuals in similar situations, 5.8 million others in need of international protection under the UNHCR's mandate, and 6 million Palestinian refugees under the mandate of UNRWA. This figure has tripled from what it was a decade ago. The main countries from which refugees originate include Syria and Afghanistan, each with 6.4 million refugees, together making up a third of the refugees under UNHCR’s mandate. They are followed by Venezuela (6.1 million refugees) and Ukraine (6.0 million refugees). Statistics show that 69% of refugees reside in neighboring countries. It’s no coincidence that these countries are under authoritarian regimes, lacking freedoms, especially economic freedom. Looking at the Freedom and Prosperity Index by Atlantic Council Freedom and Prosperity Center in Atlantic Council for 2023, it’s evident that the countries from which most refugees come rank low in freedom and prosperity. Syria ranks 160th out of 164 countries in the Freedom Index and 157 in the Prosperity Index. Venezuela is 152 in freedom and also ranks 96 in prosperity. Afghanistan is 164 in freedom and 163 in prosperity. Meanwhile, Ukraine is embroiled in a fierce war with Russia, one of the most repressive regimes, which ranks 138in freedom and 63 in prosperity The decline in democracy and economic freedoms over the past decade correlates with the increase in refugee numbers. Since 2012, political and legal freedoms have been on the decline, leading to economic and political turmoil and consequently, a tripling of refugee numbers therefor the best policy to address the humanitarian crisis of refugees is to promote freedom, democracy, and market liberalization. We must relentlessly stand against authoritarianism and ensure human dignity and a decent life for all. #WorldRefugeeDay #FreedomAndDemocracy #SupportRefugees #FreedomandProsperity #HumanRights #LibertyinMotion

World Refugee Day is held annually on June 20th to honor refugees around the world. ================================================ World Refugee Day is an important annual observance that brings global attention to the plight of refugees worldwide. The day is meant to honor the courage and resilience of those who have been forced to flee their homes, as well as to call for greater international action and support. Somalia is a prime example of a country that exemplifies the refugee crisis that World Refugee Day aims to highlight. The situation in Somalia has been dire for decades, with ongoing conflict, insecurity, and environmental disasters displacing millions of people both within the country and across borders. As of late 2023, Somalia had an estimated 3.9 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) due to conflict and violence. On June 20th each year, World Refugee Day shines a spotlight on the challenges faced by refugees like those from Somalia. It's an opportunity to recognize their resilience, to advocate for their rights and protection, and to encourage greater responsibility-sharing among the global community to address the root causes driving these mass movements of people. Somalia's situation exemplifies why this observance is so vital - it shines a spotlight on the urgent need to address the root causes driving mass displacement, to ensure the protection and rights of the displaced, and to foster durable solutions. #Refugees #IDPs #20June #Somalia

On this year’s #WorldRefugeeDay, we are invited to reflect on what solidarity with refugees entails. What is the current global situation? 🌍 In 2023, the United Nations counted 43.4 million #Refugees worldwide. 75 percent were hosted by low- and middle-income countries and 66 percent were in exile for more than five years. However, amidst highly polarized and often seemingly intractable debates on migration, many governments impose restrictions on the fundamental right to seek asylum. Concrete action and participation are needed: 🤝🏽 We are working with many partner organizations on concrete improvements to better protect and support refugees – from programs that bring refugees directly together with communities who are willing to support them, to approaches that enable refugees to find employment in other countries. At the same time, we are calling for much-needed reforms and innovation in refugee policy. These have the potential to offer greater choice and dignity to those forced to flee and leave behind the lives they have built. 📣 We also believe that solidarity means giving refugees a seat at the table where decisions that affect their lives are made. Last year, 13 governments included refugee advisors in their delegations to the Global Refugee Forum, the world’s largest conference on international refugee policy. Our partner Refugees SEAT supported many of them. Let us show solidarity with refugees and continuously find ways to better protect and assist them! #WithRefugees

In Solidarity with Refugees: Celebrating World Refugee Day! World Refugee Day: Observed annually on June 20 to honor the strength, resilience, and courage of refugees worldwide. Established: By the United Nations in 2000. Purpose: Highlights the ongoing refugee crisis and the need for global solidarity and support. Celebration: Emphasizes humanity transcending borders, politics, and prejudice. Global Challenge: Over 100 million forcibly displaced people in 2024, including 35 million refugees. Causes: Persecution, conflict, and violence force people to leave homes and families. Major Affected Countries: Syria, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Myanmar, and Venezuela. Impact: Neighboring nations and regions primarily host these displaced populations. Stories of Hope and Resilience On this day, we also take the time to listen to and share stories of hope and resilience. These narratives help humanize the refugee experience and counteract the often negative stereotypes and misconceptions. For instance, consider the story of Khaled Hosseini, a former refugee from Afghanistan who became a bestselling author, using his platform to raise awareness about the plight of refugees. Or the story of Yusra Mardini, a Syrian refugee who became an Olympic swimmer and a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, inspiring millions with her journey of perseverance and courage. How You Can Help Individual actions matter too. Here are a few ways you can show solidarity with refugees: Educate Yourself and Others. Advocate for Refugee Rights. Create Welcoming Communities. Create Welcoming Communities. Conclusion. World Refugee Day is a call to action for all of us to stand in solidarity with refugees. It is a day to celebrate their strength and resilience, to recognize their contributions, and to commit to creating a world where they can find safety, hope, and opportunities for a better future. By coming together in support of refugees, we reaffirm our shared humanity and the values of compassion, justice, and dignity for all. #WorldRefugeeDay#StandWithRefugees#RefugeesWelcome#WithRefugees #SolidarityWithRefugees#SupportRefugees#HumanRights#GlobalTogethernes #HopeAndResilience#RefugeeStories#EndXenophobia#RefugeeRights #TogetherForRefugees#HumanityFirst#RefugeeAwareness.

Today is #WorldRefugeeDay, a day to raise awareness about the millions of refugees and forcibly displaced persons worldwide. As a part of World Refugee Day, we’re bringing back the story of Munifa Ahmed, an Ethiopian refugee from Saudi Arabia who is forging a path as an entrepreneur in Canada. Often, the stories you might hear about refugees fall into one of two categories. First, there are the success stories: the refugee who flees conflict to seamlessly launch a new and successful life in Canada; the Canadian dream, so to speak. Then, there are the heartbreaking stories, those that elicit sympathy and pity, and promote global action. But what about the stories that fall in between? Munifa’s story is undoubtedly a story of success, but success built by overcoming barrier after barrier, through perseverance and despite systemic challenges. Munifa’s story reminds us that the refugee experience continues long after the border is crossed and the hearings are over, and inspires us to engage critically with how we can better support refugees in Canada, both at an individual and a community level. You can check out Munifa's story right here: https://lnkd.in/gTaPjHdk #movingtocanada #refugeeincanada

Meaningful refugee participation: Young voices matter! Young refugees are stepping up and making their voices 🗣️ heard in decisions that affect their lives. One young advocate arrived in Germany 🇩🇪 as a child and faced the struggle of not being able to communicate. This experience sparked a passion for giving a voice to those who feel unheard. The Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) (German 🇩🇪 Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development) is dedicated to fostering this engagement by actively involving refugees in policy-making processes. They recognise that refugees are not just victims but resilient 💪 individuals with valuable insights ✅. By adopting the principle of “nothing about us without us,” the BMZ ensures that young voices are included in conversations about their futures🚀. This approach not only empowers 💪🌟young refugees but also leads to more effective solutions tailored to their real needs. The more we involve them in decision-making, the more we can support their self-reliance as they rebuild their lives. Let’s trust and support these young leaders—they’re ready to shape their futures and contribute meaningfully to their communities! 🌟 Read more of this amazing collaboration below 👇. Each year on June 20th, we recognize World Refugee Day, the international day to acknowledge and honor people who have been forced to flee from their homes. Some reading this post may be refugees themselves, or a child of refugees, or know someone who is a refugee. So many people worldwide are displaced. World Refugee Day shines a light on the rights, needs, and dreams of refugees. And while it is important to protect and improve the lives of refugees every single day, international days like World Refugee Day help to focus global attention on the plight of those fleeing conflict or persecution. The theme of this year's World Refugee Day is "Hope away from Home," highlighting the need to give refugees the opportunity to study, work, and live healthy lives wherever they find safety. Inclusion is the best way to help refugees restart their lives, contribute to their new communities, and prepare them for a successful return home when conditions allow. With global forced displacement at record levels, the need for solutions and hope for millions of people fleeing conflict and persecution has never been greater.
