SPI in partnership with the AFCI | Association of Film Commissioners International, are set to update and expand the Best Practice in Screen Sector Development study.   Originally launched in 2019, the study was a first-of-its-kind analysis of the strategies, policies, and other interventions used by governments worldwide to maximise their share of the screen production market.   The updated study will expand on the scope of the initial analysis, insights and case studies, considering the changes in the global screen sector over the past five years. https://lnkd.in/dnsq6kgX

A brand new report by Martin Kanzler on the structure and development of the European box office is out! Key findings include: 🔸 Among the 12 000 films released in Europe in 2022, fewer than 100 managed to sell more than one million tickets. 🔸 European films dominate the offering (68% of films released), US films dominate the box office (63% of admissions). 🔸 75% of admissions to European films are generated in national markets. 🔸 In 2022, the top 10 films accounted alone for 34% of total admissions (highest concentration level over the past decade). 𝗘𝗨𝗥𝗢𝗖𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗠𝗔 welcomes the announcement by the German Minister of Culture, Claudia Roth, of her plan to 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 system as part of the transposition of the AVMS directive, which includes an 𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗩𝗼𝗗 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, with 70% of this amount to be devoted to original German-language productions. Today is the day that Oscar voting begins in the Documentary Feature category where North Circular is competing to select a shortlist of 15 from the field of eligible films. We are asking for members of the Documentary Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to consider voting for #NorthCircular, We are a massive underdog because we don't have a major studio or streamer partner to finance a full Oscar campaign but we did get out to Los Angeles and New York to screen the film for Academy voters last week in a whistle stop tour. North Circular also returns to Light House Cinema this Sunday at 6pm. The past few weeks have been a fascinating education in how the world of major awards campaigning works - TLDR: bring a massive war chest to the table and be working on your campaign from a year out. Put it this way: the entire production budget of North Circular is probably less than the canapés budget on a major awards campaign. But it is great to even be in the running among some of these films. And its also heartening to see such strong Irish representation in the category this year - Laura McGann's doc The Deepest Breath, co-produced by Jamie D'Alton and Anne McLoughlin along with John Battsek is one of the front runners, In The Shadow of Beirut directed by STEPHEN GERARD KELLY and Garry Keane and produced by Brendan J Byrne is competing in two slots - Best Doc and Best Intl. Feature, and Joan Baez: I Am A Noise, though a US production, is directed by Dubliner Maeve O'Boyle. Another plus from the campaign trail is getting to meet some real promising up-and-comers in the field, like Wim Wenders who has his film Anselm in the competition...I'm sure he will go far. #documentary #academy #Oscars

Box Office Analysis: African/Diaspora Films on the International Stage and Lessons from PARASITE Last week, I analyzed the global box office performance of a selection of 10 African and diaspora films released between 2000 and early 2020 (before the COVID-19 pandemic disruption), focusing on their financial success in various markets and the factors affecting their performance. I made key observations of several trends, some should be obvious; others not so much: the majority of the films had limited theatrical releases beyond film festivals, primarily in art house circuits; a noticeable difference in performance between the USA and international markets; European markets, especially France, were more receptive to African films; language and cultural specificity meant challenges in reaching broader markets; recognition at film festivals was crucial for initial exposure, even as digital distribution platforms emerge; a few outlying, unique scenarios; and much more. Additionally, the analyses included comparisons to the breakout success of the South Korean film "Parasite," to draw contextualized lessons for the African filmmaking landscape. Film i Vast’s Tomas Eskilsson has enlightening thoughts on the current film funding models and the theatrical ecosystem. I enjoyed Robert Franke insight on the creator industry within the film/tv industry. Joanna Szymanska comments on choosing collaborators with smaller budgets because of their qualities as human beings as opposed someone not so friendly who gives you money. Hannah Reifgerst is spot on with her analogy of the opera for adults to the cinemas for teenagers. For many it’s only affordable for a once a year type of experience.
