New agreement for sustainable plastics recycling! ♻️ We have signed a global joint development agreement with Anellotech, Inc. to further develop and license Anellotech’s Plas-TCat process, a one-step thermal-catalytic recycling technology. This technology converts mixed plastic wastes back into constituent basic chemicals, with a specific focus on benzene, toluene, and xylene that can be used to make most virgin plastics. The Plas-TCat process can feed all major plastics with predictable end-product yields and can reduce CO2 emissions up to 50% compared to the production of virgin monomers in naphtha crackers. 👉 To find out more: https://lnkd.in/eQPBagei #recycling #sustainability #plastics

At ENCINA, we turn hard-to-recycle plastic waste into the building blocks that our customers can use for the manufacture of new consumer products, a process that can be repeated over and over. ENCINA’s manufacturing process involves the use of heat, in the absence of oxygen, to melt plastics and separate out components. We do this using a proprietary selective catalyst. Those components are then processed to meet high purity standards, as well as compliance with ISCC - International Sustainability and Carbon Certification+ requirements. We are currently implementing this process at various scales in our San Antonio, Texas location. All of the equipment and machinery involved in our process have been in use in other industries for decades. There are a few things that set our process apart from others in the field. We combine aspects of both mechanical and molecular recycling to produce a product that is of such high purity levels it can be dropped directly into existing manufacturing processes. Most other processes produce an intermediary product that needs to be treated further to be of “drop-in” quality. That further treatment increases the energy demands and carbon footprint of the process. WANTING TO USING WASTE - CREATES PLASTIC RUBBISH In the 1920s, the demand for oil to make these new plastic consumer goods was competing with the demand for oil for transport and electricity – so their was a strong desire to create consumer plastics from ‘waste materials’ left from processing crude oil and natural gas. This led petroleum and plastics companies to become united – forming together into massive companies like Dow Chemicals, ExxonMobil, DuPont and BASF. You might have heard of them as these companies are still the major producers of raw plastic today. The first big success for the giants was Perspex in 1932, followed a year later by the accidentally discovery of the worlds most abundant plastic – polyethylene. Whilst attempting to combine ethylene and benzaldehyde under great pressure and heat, a leak of oxygen into the vessel caused the experiment to fail – leaving a white waxy substance – polyethylene. Now the world’s most abundant plastic, polyethylene was considered a wonder material: strong, flexible and heat-resistant. Its first success was as a top-secret radar insulation in WW2. This is because polyethylene was so strong yet light and thin that it made placing radar onto airplanes possible by vastly reducing the weight. After WW2 when the demand for consumer products soon followed – with the indestructible everlasting polyethylene is used in everything: from the food-waste saving Tupperware and miracle medical devices such an artificial hips; to entangling commercial fishing ropes and the ever present plastic bag. ♻️How can we practically advance circularity and recycling of plastics, closing the loop from waste to new plastic production? ⚡Pyrolysis, a form of "advanced recycling" that uses heat to break down polymers into basic building blocks, is a viable technology that can be scaled-up to significantly increase closed-loop recycled plastics.
