The UK Government has bold ambitions to make Britain a clean energy superpower. However, severe bottlenecks in the connections queue and out-of-date planning regulations must be addressed – we are already seeing projects being cancelled, investment shifting overseas, and economic growth stalling. To deliver a clean energy grid fit for the 21st century, the Government must: Implement selective interest rate cuts; ◾ Allow direct investment into the grid; ◾ Break grid monopolies and introduce competition for energy networks; and ◾ Consider new approaches to how renewable energy is priced. Read our Managing Director, John Sturman’s latest article in Smart Energy International to find out more about how the Government can redesign the grid to accelerate growth. https://lnkd.in/g2iYe4Z9

#offshorewind | GB Energy -- Somebody help me understand. I'm struggling to see what problem GB Energy is solving. Clearly there is greater investor hesitancy in offshore wind than 2-3 years ago (when everyone was piling in). But surely still ample capital chasing projects. Is GB Energy going to be some kind of anchor investor on newer tech to de-risk private investments? Is there really a shortage of private capital in all the listed newer technologies? Port investment makes sense (I'm no expert in their investment structures), where government could take a longer-term view on demand for floating wind than the lumpier volume short-term. The collab with the Crown Estate just looks like a more complicated version of the Dutch model. My worry here is trying to fix something -- U.K. offshore wind -- that isn't broken. Yes, it could be build quicker (like everything energy transition) but is GB Energy the solution?! It doesn't look like it is about to pull grid connections and faster planning out of a hat. And it will probably have to accept lower than market returns to be competitive in any auction/tender with an experienced incumbent. https://lnkd.in/dXTFXAQN

Decarbonising the National Electricity Market (NEM) is critical to decarbonising our economy. "The post-coal era will be here in less than 10 years. Planning for this future needs to start now. " Great article by the Grattan Institute on the energy transition. https://lnkd.in/gMAStr9a I have been talking to small businesses about the transition from gas to renewable solutions to be ready. The difference between a 6-burner gas cooktop and an electric solution is $8000 to $24000 in a restaurant. What are you doing to get your business ready for the transition? #SmallBusiness #RenewableEnergy #EnergyTransition

⚡ In a week where the UK ends coal power generation, the UK has launched a new national TSO. Named - the National Energy System Operator (NESO), the new TSO will oversee the country's electricity and gas systems, in another step towards net-zero. ⚡ The government has said that the new organisation will ensure the country’s energy infrastructure is secure, resilient, flexible, and future-proof. They added that the current system requires a more integrated and coordinated strategy to meet the unprecedented challenges of climate change, ensuring secure energy supply, and keeping costs manageable for consumers. Energy Minister Michael Shanks added: “We are on a mission to make Britain a clean energy superpower, and today marks a milestone in that journey with the launch of NESO." “NESO will help to set a path to decarbonising our networks, giving the industry confidence to invest in a clean energy future and supporting skilled jobs across the country.” #netzero #NESO #UKgovernment #renewablenergy #oxborecruitment https://lnkd.in/eWCrKkvB

Australian Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen has confirmed an overwhelming response to the first national Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) tender, with over 40 GW of variable renewables projects registered. This historic scheme aims to boost Australia's clean energy transition by adding new dispatchable renewable capacity. Key Highlights: 1️⃣ First CIS Auction Success: The initial auction aims to support 6 GW of new power and has attracted 40 GW of project registrations, showcasing immense investor confidence in the CIS framework. 2️⃣ Government Commitment: The Australian government will conduct six-monthly competitive tenders through 2027, targeting 9 GW of dispatchable capacity and 23 GW of variable capacity by 2030. 3️⃣ Future Reliability: This initiative is crucial for filling reliability gaps as ageing coal power stations are phased out, ensuring a stable and sustainable energy future. This massive interest in the CIS framework is a clear signal that Australia's energy market is rapidly evolving towards a greener, more reliable future. 🔗 Read more about Australia's Capacity Investment Scheme: https://lnkd.in/dv_WjWPi #RenewableEnergy #CleanEnergy #SustainableFuture #GreenEnergy #EnergyTransition pv magazine Global

Learn more about the UK government's ambitious energy transition plans in this stellar briefing by my HFW colleagues Lea Hiltenkamp, Alistair Mackie, and Alex Kyriakoulis … Highlights include: 1) Creation of GB Energy - a new public energy company investing in clean energy technologies. 2) Establishment of the National Wealth Fund - with planned investments (exceeding £7 billion in aggregate) in port infrastructure, gigafactories, clean steel, carbon capture, and green hydrogen. 3) Overcoming access queueing and strategic planning of transmission systems - with the proposed establishment of a Future Systems Operator. 4) Overturning the ban on onshore wind in England. Check out the full article below!
The new UK Labour government has announced an ambitious energy transition program with first year policies aiming to deliver a zero carbon electricity system by 2030. Labour intends to show climate leadership by quadrupling offshore wind generation by 2030, pioneering at least 5GW of floating offshore wind projects, tripling solar power, and doubling onshore wind capacity. This is in addition to investing in carbon capture and storage and doubling the government’s target on green hydrogen. In our latest briefing, HFW's Alistair Mackie, Alex Kyriakoulis and Lea Hiltenkamp share key takeaways for the energy industry. Major delays in expanding Australia's east-coast power grid are limiting renewable energy integration and could increase electricity prices. High-voltage power lines are needed to connect renewable generators and batteries to major cities, supporting the transition from coal and gas. It was alarming to read that grid modernisation projects are delayed by an average of three years due to rising construction costs, skills and equipment shortages, and opposition from rural communities. All of which could lead to reliability issues and volatile wholesale prices. Some disappointing obstacles that could greatly hinder the government’s target of 82% green energy by 2030. #renewableenergy #sustainability #construction
