United States Shipyards are crucial for the US Navy's goal of increasing the fleet size from 290 to 340 vessels by 2053. These shipyards, once the backbone of flourishing communities, now face a myriad of challenges—from talent gaps to outdated operating models—that threaten their ability to grow and thrive. Additionally, the industry is grappling with aging infrastructure and intense global competition, making it imperative for both public and private sectors to collaborate on innovative solutions. Addressing these issues is essential not only for maritime security but also for revitalizing local economies that depend on the maritime industry. Read the article below from McKinsey & Company on the untapped potential of American shipbuilding. https://lnkd.in/eJmVtjBg

Hellenic Shipyards S.A. was the largest shipyard in the area of the eastern Mediterranean from the mid 1950s to the end of 2022. During its operation, it stood worldwide for its outstanding know-how and experience in manufacturing, converting and repairing naval and commercial ships. During the past thirty years, it also carried out major new-building projects for the Hellenic Navy such as the MEKO frigates and the Class 214 submarines, which are to this day the backbone of the Hellenic Navy's Fleet. In April 2018, Hellenic Shipyards S.A. was placed under special administration and the company stopped operating altogether in January 2023, when the entire staff was dismissed and all activity in the yard stopped. It has since been replaced by a another business entity with a new corporate name, operating at the same premises but under new ownership and with a different staff and scope of projects.

Last week, we asked you to identify the three core sectors of Fincantieri shipbuilding. If you guessed B (cruise, naval, offshore), you were spot on! 🏆 While we’re well-known in the U.S.A. for our work with the U.S. Navy and offshore projects at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding, our parent company, Fincantieri, holds over 40% of the cruise ship market. ___________________________________________ In recent news, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw (WLBB 30) has arrived at our Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding yard for inspection, maintenance, and improvements. Built by the Marinette Marine Manitowoc Marine Group and launched in 2005, Mackinaw plays a vital role in commerce and safety. The US Navy's shipbuilding strategy is at a critical juncture. With global naval power dynamics rapidly evolving, modernizing and expanding the U.S. fleet has never been more urgent. Although the U.S. leads in power capabilities and advanced technology, China, Japan, and South Korea produce 93% of the world’s commercial ships, with China's Navy boasting 370 vessels compared to the U.S. fleet’s 291. By treating shipyards as national assets—the U.S. can bolster its shipbuilding industry and enhance naval capabilities. Modernizing our shipyards and adopting efficient production strategies are essential steps forward.
