Faculty Director, Frederick A. & Barbara M. Erb Institute; Max McGraw Professor of Sustainable Enterprise, SEAS & Ross, University of Michigan
GreenBiz '24: *21 videotaped interviews with sustainability leaders (way to go, University of Michigan - Erb Institute students Jillian Brown, Annie Villalon Kartheiser, Jacob Kennedy, Supreya Kesavan, Madison Parrish, Nick Rojas), *2 alumni meet ups (great to connect with you all!), *4 breakfast conversations (thank you Andrew Winston, Kevin Self, Bryan Lewis, Cheryl Comer), *Many great sessions, informal conversations and a great set of Instagram posts (thanks Nick Rojas). We showed up! We learned! We connected! Thanks for the push to make this happen, Kevin Self. Some takeaways: *Electronic waste streams are more concentrated sources of conflict minerals than many mines. *30% of water is lost in municipal water systems through leaks. *Innovative public/private/non-profit partnerships are pushing the boundaries. *AI is being used in many different ways to identify, measure and create ESG improvements. So many AI startups! *"Sustainability is a team sport" (Melanie Nakagawa, CSO, Microsoft) – “a full body contact team sport” (Jim Andrew, CSO, PepsiCo). *Leading companies are experimenting in many ways to identify new opportunities -- others are still having to work hard to make the business case to other managers in their firm. *Philanthropic money is often needed for the most radical innovations *Incremental innovations are not anywhere near enough. We have work to do. Carmen Quinonez, Tedra White
It's a wrap! Erb Faculty Director Charlene Zietsma and I just finished our first GreenBiz in Phoenix with six of our amazing Erb Dual-Degree students. Thank you Jillian Brown, Annie Villalon Kartheiser, Jacob Kennedy, Supreya Kesavan, Madison Parrish and Nick Rojas for elevating Erb and making this such a great week. And thank you Kevin Self, Andrew Winston, Bryan Lewis, Pete May, Cheryl D. Comer, Esq., and David Fiss for generously sharing your experience, expertise and networks with us. See you next year! Bioelectric Cell Control ⚡ 💡 How we can manipulate bioelectricity to grow muscle cells 💪 🥩 Such a fascinating topic. I highly recommend this podcast interview, released more than a year ago. Sophia Letcher, a New Harvest research fellow works in David Kaplan's lab at Tufts University / Tufts Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences / Tufts University Center for Cellular Agriculture (TUCCA) 🔬 . She discusses the feasibility of possibly re-inventing what sort of "meat" we'll be re-creating or INVENTING from SCRATCH. With the use of varying bioelectricity the muscle cells experience during their development. Super interesting and something I personally haven't come across before in the general discussion around cultivated meat. Here are some of my favourite takeaways, I quote Sophie directly from the podcast transcript 💭 : " .... if we can use these cues [from tissues naturally] to instruct natural patterns, maybe we can push them to go beyond their natural state and maybe make a really thick muscle fibre that wouldn't normally develop but by telling them to keep developing ... " " ... can instruct tissue development and can actually override existing genetic signals, and to simplify, this positive charge is kind of a cue to grow or proliferate, whereas a negative charge means mature, so in muscle this would infuse and differentiate, and so the idea is to capitalize on this when trying to grow meat because this field hadn't really been applied to me in mostly studying development ... " I am intrigued to explore more about this topic of #bioelectricity and it's application for #cultivatedmeat in the conversation around #futureoffood in the field of #cellularagriculture and #alternativeproteins. Would love to hear your thoughts or if you have researched this topic! Have a wonderful weekend ahead everyone! #cultivatedmeat #cellularagriculture #bioelectric #cell #control #scaffolding

Unleashing Creativity with Science 🔬 At Kidzonia, National Science Day is not just an event; it's a celebration of the imaginative power that science instills in our children. Today, we transformed our classrooms into laboratories of creativity, where each experiment is a masterpiece waiting to happen. From building eco-friendly projects to designing simple machines, our students proved that science is the canvas, and their minds, the brush. This special day is a testament to the fact that when we blend science with creativity, we open a world of innovation and environmental stewardship. Let's encourage our young geniuses to keep experimenting, to keep creating, and to keep believing that through science, they can change the world. #CreativeMinds #ScienceIsArt #InnovateForFuture #EcoWarriors #KidzoniaCelebratesScience

Jensen Huang's NVIDIA GTC Keynote was stunning in many ways. I think of myself as an AI pragmatist*, but I still got the vibes that this keynote could mean as much for Scientific computing as Jobs '07 did for Mobile computing. Even outside of the monstrously powerful exaflop-in-a-box** and some other really cool tech, I was amazed at how much time was spent by the CEO of the (soon-to-be) biggest company in the world talking actual scientific computing applications. This has surely never happened in economic history. We had climate and weather, CFD, digital twins, (a lot of) robotics and of course foundation models in all of the above contexts. Speaking of foundation models, SciFMs in many domains can't rely on straightforward tokenizations, (nor are there clean building blocks) and we need a lot more than LLMs (regardless of their emergent properties or lack thereof). There are many unknowns and one cannot ignore the entropy generation,*** but in a sense, the GTC nicely sets up some important discussions for #SciFM24 (agenda is attached). * e.g. not fully convinced by present-day emergence claims; inductive biases aren't going away (in many fields); we won't get to AGI by 2040,... ** FP4 nonetheless, but inferencing appears to be more than an order of magnitude faster than the H100s which are themselves incredible. *** By the end of this decade, AI could consume as much as 20% of the total electrical energy demand in the US.
#SciFM24 has an absolutely stellar lineup of speakers and panelists and 400+ participants. The full agenda is below. More details (and registration @ micde.umich.edu/SciFM24 ) The first day will feature applications of LLMs in science (Drug Discovery, Biology & Materials) followed by a hands-on workshop. The second day will feature two sessions on emerging ideas and frontiers of Scientific Foundation models and two panels pondering big questions for SciFM and on how to construct an ecosystem. Heng Ji, Arvind R. Venkat Viswanathan, Michael Mahoney, Sean Welleck, Jonathan Carter, Payel Das, Ian Foster, Alfred Hero, Petros Koumoutsakos, Anima Anandkumar, Jason Pruet, jean-luc cambier, Alvaro Velasquez, Rajesh Swaminathan, John Wei, Karthik Duraisamy + The TPC team. #foundationmodels #generativeai #llms #ai4science
