How can we… ? Sustainability is a journey filled with both successes and setbacks. As with many transformations coupled with innovation, failures are inevitable. And the fear of the unknown can lead to reactions of fight or flight. Yet, we could embrace the learning process. Are we ready to lean in and learn ? Often, I hear about what we must do or what others shouldn't do. This can create division and polarization. What if we shifted our mindset and asked, "How can we...?” Are you ready to join this journey? Today's conference with Enterprise for Society Center (E4S) and CEDIDAC - Université de Lausanne was a great example of how open and honest discussions can foster a trusting environment. By sharing genuine ideas, learnings, and reality checks, we can work together to make sustainability a reality. Thank you to Jean-Pierre Danthine, Dr. Florian Hoos, Giulia Neri-Castracane, Christina Hertel, Michel Jaccard, Ian Roberts, Florence Hugard, Manon Schläpfer, Stéphane Nusbaumer, Aline Darbellay, Mathieu Blanc for your valuable contributions to this important topic. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ From Best Practices to Next Practices⭐ ⭐ ⭐ A Mission-Oriented Innovation Policy (MOIP), is an approach to innovation policy that focuses on addressing specific societal challenges by mobilizing science, technology, and innovation to achieve defined goals within a specified timeframe. MOIPs aim to align research, development, and innovation efforts towards achieving these missions, often involving a mix of top-down direction from policymakers and bottom-up input from stakeholders. ⭐ The Nordic countries (Sweden, Finland, Denmark) have distinct approaches to Mission-Oriented Innovation Policies (MOIPs), with Sweden focusing on consensus-driven policy-making, Finland emphasizing private enterprises leading innovation ecosystems, and Denmark adopting a more centralized approach with clear government involvement. ⭐ Implementation of MOIPs in the Nordic countries involves a mix of top-down and bottom-up processes, with stakeholders playing a significant role in defining and implementing Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) goals. ⭐ Denmark has integrated a mission-oriented approach into its national research and innovation strategy, focusing on green initiatives and setting ambitious emissions targets, influencing mission selection to align with climate policy goals. #InnovationLeadership #NordicInnovation #MOIPs #MissionOrientedApproach #NordicCountries #ResearchAndDevelopment #InnovationPolicy #StakeholderEngagement #SustainableDevelopment #PolicyMaking #TransformativeInnovation #GreenResearch #ClimateAction #CollaborationInnovation #TopDownBottomUp #digitaltransformation #digitalhealth #communitydriven https://lnkd.in/gh3nBm3w

Hmm... What a surprising turn of events this morning! I woke up on the morning of July 22nd thinking it was going to be another day with my usual routine. But everything changed at 10:00 AM when I saw a colleague rushing off to a program. Curious, I asked him what was going on and realized that the "College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CONAS) Conference 2024" was already in session. I had completely forgotten about the program! Quickly, I freshened up, dressed, and knotted my tie. Though I was already late, I had to pull myself together to ensure I attend with 100% steeze and composure. Upon arriving, I registered just in time for the tea break, which was a delight since I hadn't had anything to eat that morning. The hospitality and organization were top-notch. Post tea break, we returned to the conference hall for an inspiring keynote presentation on "Science and Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development" by Professor Lateef Sanni. He emphasized the importance of balancing economic growth, environmental protection, and social well-being through innovative solutions to global challenges like poverty, inequality, climate change, and environmental degradation. One concept that stood out to me was using biochar to create carbon-negative construction materials, turning waste into valuable resources for sustainability. After the keynote, we had Solat, followed by a delicious lunch. The day culminated in a Technical session where I had the pleasure of listening to incredible speakers, including my colleagues Faisol Abdulakeem and Mohdyasir Shobaloju, who shared their brilliant research and insights. It truly was a wonderful experience, and I gained so much more than I expected from the program. Thank you, Fountain University, for this incredible opportunity! #CONAS2024 #SustainableDevelopment #ScienceAndEntrepreneurship #Innovation #Biochar #EnvironmentalSustainability #Research #Networking #FountainUniversity #ConferenceExperience #LearningAndGrowth

Reflecting on the Umeå Transformation Research Initiative (UTRI) First Annual Conference "Actions for Sustainable Transformations" I had the honor of attending an insightful first edition conference hosted by UTRI on Thursday, November 28, 2024, which aims to highlight research efforts towards better future. The conference spotlight research contributions toward a sustainable world, broadening the concept of transformation and exploring how it can be applied across various research field. The following are some key takeaways that struck a chord with me: 1. Innovative Analytical Techniques for Circularity and Sustainability: The session on understanding materials at their most fundamental level offered insights into how elements move through society and strategies for increasing circularity. It was a reminder of how technology and interdisciplinary research can drive meaningful societal change. 2. Building Capacity for Transformative Research: A workshop on capacity building emphasized the importance of equipping young researchers with cross-disciplinary skills. The interactive discussions highlighted how we, as emerging professionals, can operationalize societal changes toward a sustainable future. 3. Human-Building Interaction and Climate Adaptation: Exploring the Intelligent Human-Buildings Interactions Lab (IHBI) was fascinating. It demonstrated how occupant-centric building design and energy-efficient solutions can make a tangible difference in climate change adaptation, especially in Nordic contexts. 4. Understanding Disaster Management in a Climate-Challenged World: Discussions on disaster management and climate adaptation reinforced the importance of integrating preparedness with risk mitigation. Real-world examples brought clarity to how these areas intersect in managing crises, from hurricanes to industrial risks. 5. Communication Challenges in the Green Transition: The session on societal green shifts in Northern Sweden explored the pivotal role of communication in fostering social innovation and inclusivity during industrial transformation. It was a reminder that communication is not just about information but also about empowering participation. What I Gained: This conference was a transformative experience. It deepened my understanding of sustainability challenges, enriched my perspective on cross-disciplinary approaches, and inspired me to think more critically about my own role in advancing these conversations. As someone passionate about environmental economics, sustainable development, and fostering change through research and practice, I found this event incredibly impactful. It reaffirmed my commitment to being part of the solutions for a more sustainable future. #Sustainability #Research #CircularEconomy #ClimateAdaptation #GreenTransition #Leadership

Electrifying discussions and multidimensional perspectives on deepening sustainability assessment with UNRISD@Concordia University and Karl Polanyi Institut, Montreal. I felt electrified in a room with so much know-how and experience in #sustainabilityreporting, #impactmeasurement and #contextualization. The Workshop on Deepening Sustainability Assessment Initiatives: Exploring ways enhance sustainability measurement and reporting methods organized by UNRISD in collaboration with LKS CORP S.A. - GRUPO MONDRAGON and The Predistribution Initiative, felt like an extension of discussion that are already going on about SDPI. And we in Germany have a lot of fruitful discussions about SDPI with Franziska Weeger, Susanne Knappstein, Henrik Basche, Oliver Becker, Delphine Teske, Sabine Müller and many more. What a coincidence having the UNRISD Workshop on such a remarkable place, especially when we are thinking about re-embedding economy in society and nature, when referring to Karl Polanyi and the great transformation. What do you think Yvonne Zwick? The perspective of seeing the economy as a social contract, what doesn’t fulfill its promises with the result what leads us to a collision course with this planet - lead me to deep reflection. Could the Multi Capital Model be an approach that brings us closer to a #regenerativefuture? What if we think about a metaverse culture where putting authentic sustainable measurement in the heart of global #zeitgeist? What is material in this context and how to define materiality, while having in mind materiality is dynamic and social constructed? When do we integrate thresholds and allocation into common used materiality and create the perspective of triple materality? It is on us to do that, everyone who is reporting about sustainability has it in their own hands to make the choice to look and report through the lens of triple materiality. #authenticsustainability #regenerativefuture #regeneration #sustainablecompanies #sustainableorganizations #sustainablefuture #triplemateraility #sustainabilityreporting #multicapitalmodel Goran Jeras Ibon Zugasti Katharina Herzog Tatiana Glad
