As an Irish citizen working with one of the world's leading digital health companies, it’s disheartening to see how far behind Ireland lags in embracing digital innovation within our healthcare system. While digital health is gaining momentum across the EU and the US — with Germany's DiGA model and France's PECAN following suit, and PDURS on the horizon in the US — Ireland has the talent and ambition to not only catch up but to excel. The time for Ireland to fully commit to healthcare digitization is now. We have the expertise, innovation, and drive needed to modernize our system and deliver better, more efficient patient care. I fully support the work of Martin Curley and his colleagues on the Maynooth Manifesto, which is a critical step in pushing this agenda forward. The future of healthcare is digital, and Ireland should be at the forefront. #DigitalHealth #Innovation #Healthcare #Ireland #HealthcareInnovation

THE FUTURE OF HEALTH SYSTEMS: A 2024 PERSPECTIVE As we navigate through 2024, the global health sector continues to evolve, grappling with lingering COVID-19 legacy issues but also striving to drive change. Amidst discussions on pandemic response, emergency preparedness, digital transformation, and data utilization, one thing remains clear: the key to success lies in the development of robust health systems. In many Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), governments face the daunting task of escalating demands amidst increasing fiscal pressure. The challenge is not just about how much money is spent on health system improvements, but about how wisely the available funding is used. System thinking can be beneficial in this context. A critical starting point is to ask: Do we have the right functional system to deliver all required services? Do we have access to the right people, equipped with the right tools and resources, and are they coordinated effectively? How can we better drive synergies between all stakeholders, including public, private, and donors? As debates around these topics intensify, there's a risk of them being overshadowed by short-term rhetoric driven by political agendas. From my perspective, healthcare systems perform optimally when planned with a long-term vision, allowing for periodic reviews and adjustments. The perception that the developed world has replicable health systems for others to follow has been challenged, especially in the wake of COVID-19. Perhaps developing markets can offer valuable insights on what needs to be considered when building sustainable health systems. Here are some fundamentals that I believe will contribute to maintaining focus on developing and evolving health systems: - Understand and then smartly tackle the under-investment gap in the health sector. - Be wary of the risk of pendulum themed planning and perhaps align financing to support cohesiveness. - Correctly assess, plan, and then deploy technology. Think practical reality, not hype. - Invest in quality across the health systems spectrum. - Understand referral management to better organize access at the the appropriate level of care. - Support affordable healthcare through better payment mechanisms and reducing the scourge of out-of-pocket payments. - Ensure a consistent supply of good quality affordable drugs and medical consumables. - Plan and align medical equipment to need, and remember you might need to invest in people to make it work! - Understand and challenge historic norms that have now created what is becoming an urgent need to train more health professionals. - Effectively coordinate public and private collaboration. While this may seem like a big ask, and relatively easy on paper, the reality is far more complex. It requires long-term commitment and the ability to stay focused on a clear strategy. But with concerted effort and strategic thinking, we can make significant strides in improving global health systems.

💻 ⚕ Check out the The Digital Health Blueprint 2023-2033, published by the Australian Government a few days before Christmas! 🔟 🗺 The ten year roadmap aims to ensure the digital systems drive better care for all Australians, by: 🎯 ensuring health information follows patients through the health system 🎯enabling our world-class healthcare professionals to access a joined up, real-time view of their patients’ health information at the point of care; 🎯making our health system more responsive to emerging technologies, while ensuring the safe and secure use of health data. The Blueprint identifies the outcomes needed for consumers, healthcare providers, researchers, industry and innovators. The compendium, Action Plan highlights the initiatives the government are investing in to meet the outcomes outlined in the Blueprint (see link in comment) in the three horizons: 1️⃣ Short-term Horizon: 2023-2025 2️⃣ Mid-term Horizon : 2025-2028 3️⃣ Long-term Horizon: 2028-2033 It's worth noting that the 2023-2024 budget for digital health includes: 💰 A$325.7 million ($220 million) to the Australian Digital Health Agency an 💰A$429 million ($290 million) to modernise My Health Record; and 💰A$126.8 million ($86 million) to renew the Intergovernmental Agreement on National Digital Health However, with various initiatives outlined in the action plan including: ✅ Ongoing health policy efforts ✅ Modernisation of My Health Record ✅ Enhancing My Health Record capabilities ✅ Enhancing medication management ✅ National standards to support health system interoperability ✅ National health information exchange capabilities ✅ Workforce development ✅Mental health ✅Digital initiatives supporting population health ✅Genomics ✅Aged care ❓ The real question is when of the funding be available to address some of these gaps by realising some of these initiatives. 🛑 On the translation and commercialisation front - funding and access to capital remains a challenge for the Australian digital health industry to drive the commercialisation of innovations. Check out ANDHealth's Digital Health State of the Industry Reports for data of Australia's Digital Health Landscape. 📘 The report is a useful policy document helps investors, founders and end users to better understand the Australia's Digital Health national landscape and strategy the next decade. ⌨Have your read the report?
