The Human Story – our origins and early history – is a woven tapestry of cultures, narratives, people, and events. If that's the case, why should middle schoolers study it in siloed units and chapters? 🤔 Our new Middle School World History units use an inquiry-based conceptual framework to connect and deepen students’ knowledge. 👏 Students can better connect the past to their lives by focusing on essential questions and concepts. ❤️ Learn more about our new curriculum. ➡️ https://bit.ly/49nJ2DP

This year at Oak National Academy, we’ve been releasing a brand new curriculum for secondary history with our expert partners Future Academies. With the curriculum nearly fully resourced, let’s explore the resource I’m MOST proud of…🥁 📌 The British Empire: how far was it transformed in the mid-nineteenth century? These new resources for secondary history teachers have been carefully planned and produced. Here are three reasons why I think they’re unmissable: With a clear focus and attention to detail, they tackle a subject that is sometimes dealt with superficially: the mid-nineteenth century British Empire. They deal with a difficult, yet fundamental issue in Britain’s past. Historians such as David Olusoga have warned school leaders about the danger of teaching a dishonest version of the past. These resources seek to do the opposite. The resources are shaped around an enquiry question investigating the extent of change to the British Empire during the nineteenth century. This provides a clear structure and guidance for pupils’ learning about this fascinating topic. But, don’t just listen to me. Check them out here: https://lnkd.in/etvUYTPk

The ultimate goal of democracy is for people to resolve differences and make decisions peacefully. Teaching students to frame discussions in healthy ways has never been more important. This course helps you take on this challenge by looking at research-based strategies for classroom dialogues, discussions, and debates. Topics we explore: Is a debate—which asks students to confront classmates and change their beliefs in order to win—teaching the right civic skills and dispositions? Is there value infusing classroom dialogues that remove oppositional thinking? How do we learn to value our differences? As well as frameworks and tools for tackling challenging and controversial issues in ways that build relationships and create nuanced understanding. Join us this summer!
