💡 April is here, which means the PE&RS April 2024 issue is available now ( if you are an ASPRS member 😉 ) This month’s cover is part of USGS/NASA’s Earth As Art 6, https://www.usgs. gov/centers/eros/earth-art. In addition to their scientific value, many satellite images are simply intriguing to look at. Satellites capture an incredible variety of views of Earth. See the mesmerizing beauty of river deltas, mountains, and other sandy, salty, and icy landscapes. Some might even remind you of actual famous works of art! The first edition of Earth As Art was published in 2001. The most recent collection, Earth As Art 6, was released in 2019. Jebel Kissu, in northwestern Sudan, emerges abruptly like an island in the vast Sahara Desert. The plateau is the eroded remnant of a granite dome. The bright linear features are truck tracks, common in the Sahara where there are no paved roads. Resembling graphic novel art style, this image could be an asteroid hurtling toward Earth, burning across a twilight sky. https://lnkd.in/gbzVBC7B

Astronomers capture a green ghost in our atmosphere High up in the atmosphere, near the boundary of space, a dazzling, fleeting flash of red sometimes briefly appears above a thunderstorm before evaporating away. These events, which occur far above when lightning strikes in the lower atmosphere, are called sprites. They fall under the umbrella of transient luminous events (TLEs) and only in the past few decades have we been able to observe them. And only since 2019 have we discovered that one out of 100 sprites producers an even more elusive, even more mysterious phenomenon: a greenish glow called a ghost. A new study published today in Nature Communications hints at when and why sprites might form these ghosts.

It humorously explores human identity, existentialism, and the search for meaning in a modern world dominated by science and technology. The book uses a mock self-help format to pose philosophical questions, encouraging readers to ponder their place in the universe. #galaxyaerosgh #space #spaceexploration #SpaceNews

Book Review | The Future of Geography: How Power and Politics in Space Will Change Our World,” by Tim Marshall, offers an in-depth analysis of the geopolitical aspects of space exploration. The book’s main argument is that space has become an essential part of the geopolitical landscape of Earth, offering substantial potential for exploration and resource utilization while simultaneously bringing complexities and the risk of conflict. The future of space exploration and utilization will significantly impact humanity, necessitating careful consideration of political, military, and ethical issues. The Nutshell Kings: Roots of Resistance to Human Space Exploration and Settlement Milan M. Ćirković We should face the fact that in promoting a vision of human space exploration and settlement we face not only natural obstacles and technological challenges, but also active human resistance. Recent years have seen both a revival of space programs, mostly propelled by private industry’s increasing interest, and the (re)emergence of strong resistance to human space activities on several levels. This is partly a manifestation of a wider counter-Enlightenment Zeitgeist, as detectable in other sectors of public life in the West, and partly a reaction against the widespread engagement of the private sector. While it still does not dominate the discourse on space issues, space scepticism/space resistance is surprisingly wide-ranging and decentralized phenomenon, gathering together such heterogeneous strands of thought from anti-Enlightenment postmodernists and critical constructivists to rabid “deep ecology” activists to philosophical pessimists/nihilists to antiglobalist activists of all colours. There has been precious little in way of actively opposing this cultural trend so far, however. The present talk will review major strands of thought within this “big tent” cultural movement and offer a taxonomy of their ideological roots. Some suggestions as to the important cultural, educational and public-outreach work which needs to be done to balance the scales as given as well. https://lnkd.in/dGBS3BUg #spaceexploration, #SpaceSettlement, #geocentrism, #antiliberalism, #stemeducation, #publicoutreach

Ceres’s surface is ice-rich and warm, so we expect craters to viscously flow. Yet most of Ceres’s craters are not shallow. A new model, created by Ian Pamerleau and Prof. Mike Sori of Purdue Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences, that includes a stronger, progressively dirtier icy crust, frozen from an ancient ocean, may reconcile this discrepancy. Their discovery is highlighted in this Nature Portfolio article. #thenextgiantleap #boilerup https://lnkd.in/d4P3TFgc

We should, like a plant, be rooted in our own inherent nature but should be open to the FACE-CENTERED SUN of knowledge and the BODY-CENTERED winds of change enlightening and enriching the functional, structural, or evolutionary relationships inside-outwards. https://lnkd.in/gTzM_Psj
