Animation appears to be on the rise once more. Whether it's Japanese inspired Anime or raunchy Adult Swim style shows, more and more streaming services and social media platforms are investing in this time-honored art form. A few years ago I started developing my own animated series called "The Dead Possum Inn." Inspired by my real life experiences working the weekend shift at a one-star hotel in Indiana, writing The Dead Possum Inn went from being a form of therapy to becoming something... different. The characters slowly started to evolve into 3-dimensional humans with hopes, dreams, and emotions. And the world they lived in became a bizarre and surreal playground from my demented imagination. For the past few years I've been looking for an animation studio or production company to help me bring this quirky show to life. Pitch Tip Tuesday! Don't go chasing waterfalls... and trends. Just because something is popular today, does not mean it will be popular tomorrow, six months from now or two years from now. When you're thinking about your next project, it is okay to be mindful about what is working with today's audience, but you do not need to copy it or chase it. Instead, you should be inspired by a trend-- think about why it is trending and what are people connecting to with the trend? Behind every trend is something that is universal-- maybe it's an emotion or a feeling? We've all seen dozens of zombie TV shows and movies, but what is it about the good ones that rise above? More often than not, it is the voice of the creator having a unique creative perspective, more than it is about the special FX make-up. For every The Last Of Us, there are a hundred zombie films and games sitting and collecting dust because someone thought "People like zombies, let's just make a zombie movie". Create something you love, that has a point of view and that you want to see with an audience one day. Well, despite the image above, I'll immediately point out that when I talk here about "storytelling" I won't be dealing with writing, scriptwriting or screenplays at all (even if some of the more experienced will certainly recognize the typewriter model depicted, somehow very linked to the History of Cinema - the solution in the post). Storytelling is among what we have defined as the three pillars of character animation (along with Movement and Acting), the most advanced and complex, the one that really gives a final meaning to our work. This knack for finding quick solutions transferred seamlessly to the film set, saving both time and money for the producers. Now, he's applying this same Kiwi ingenuity to the world of animation. Despite traditional barriers to entry in animation production, Grant has found a way to overcome them. By combining and utilising the latest software with a little bit of resourcefulness, he's developed a cost-effective method that allows even someone with limited resources but still substantial in a developing country, to create an engaging short animation film.
