#NationalDisabilityIndependenceDay is celebrated every year today, July 26th. In order to plot a more intentional course toward systemic change that achieves the inclusion, access, liberation and economic health and wellbeing of disabled women and families, we’re sharing the National Partnership for Women & Families’ Disability Economic Justice Systems Transformation Guide. It examines the systemic barriers that disabled women, particularly disabled Women of Color, and their families face in obtaining and maintaining employment. As we celebrate the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act this month, we also recognize the necessary strides we still need to make toward full inclusion and equity for disabled people. The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law July 26, 1990. This month, we celebrate the impact of this crucial human rights law on disabled people’s lives, and recognize the incredible contributions disabled folks make to our society every day. As we commemorate Disability Pride Month, and always: Disabled people belong. In women’s rights conversations. In business. In positions of leadership. In our movies, our messages, our songs, our shows, our art, our movements. But that’s not exactly right, is it? Disabled people belong in THEIR conversations. THEIR businesses, movies, messages, songs, shows, movements. Life, respect, and dignity belong to all of us. In all the places decisions are being made. In all the places lives are being lived. Whatever accommodations and care disabled folks need, they deserve. Just like all of us. Disabled people deserve their lives, their autonomy, and our unwavering support and respect as they continue to shape and enrich the world. #DisabilityPride #DisabilityPrideMonth
