Did you know that the government will now fully fund apprenticeship costs for those under the age of 21 who are employed at small firms? More and more employers in the historic environment sector are feeling the benefits of employing apprentices, starting with recruitment. For more information on these funding changes: https://lnkd.in/ev-zeQtX An apprentice position will often attract high-calibre candidates who don’t want to pursue the university option, giving employers a greater choice in the pool of talent. There’s also the systematic training and learning, which results in a fully skilled, competent person at the end of the programme, with the right behavioural skills, who can really contribute to the workforce. The employer and apprentice are supported by a professional training organisation, right from the start. All apprentices spend 20% of their time in formal, off-the-job training which is designed and delivered by the training provider, based on the competence standards. CIfA’s Assessment Centre Manager, Amanda Wood, heaps praise on heritage sector apprentices on Apprentice Wednesday during National Apprenticeships Week. “At CIfA Qualifications, we’ve been providing end-point assessment for apprentices for nearly three years now, so we see them just as they’ve finished training. Our assessors are consistently telling us how outstanding the apprentices are, both in terms of well-developed technical skills and their extremely positive attitude in the workplace. Their enthusiasm shows in spades! By the nature of the job, our assessors get really close to the work that the apprentices do, and it’s clear that they’re very impressed with how dedicated they are. They also see how the apprentices are making a great contribution to their workplace and teams. While our pass rates speak for themselves, the informal feedback from our assessors is that this route into the heritage sector is proving to be a win-win!" We met a couple of IT apprentices today who had made it through to the final stages of interview (with Kevin Stevenson). Given they were apprentices that didn't have the usual depth of technical knowledge that could be relatively easily grilled 😀 , we wanted to probe a little deeper on some of their softer skills... We teed up some "would you rather..." questions, some were really just for fun to see how they would handle it - some were more professional around the sorts of work environment they'd react better to. The responses were great - extremely varied - and really gave a useful insight into what made them tick. Far better than I thought they'd turn out to be honest. - Would you rather be a superhero or a supervillain? One response pointed out that the villain gets to use all their powers in any way they want - whereas the hero needs to use them in a positive/beneficial way and it would be far more stressful. - Would you rather meet an alien or a dinosaur? One of the funnier questions that would be asked of a dinosaur (T rex) was "how do you scratch your back with these wee hands?" - Would you rather have a desk in a noisy room or in a quiet corner? Expected responses tbh here along the lines of different rooms for different assignments or projects - I can adapt to both etc. All questions got plenty of giggles, and proved a really useful method of making those who attended feel at ease. Maybe something to consider with apprentices going forward - or maybe just something to stimulate some thoughts/conversations if needed? A really exciting chapter for WGM IT Team as we invest in the future of the team. #apprenticeships are a valuable option for consideration as a career path to offer the youngsters of today - and working with the team at QA Apprenticeships has been great. Today two of our apprentices, Holly Steel our L6 Digital Marketer and Finnley Kriehn our L2 Assistant Scientist in Plant Protection, took the opportunity during National Apprenticeship Week to visit a local school in the area, to share their experience as apprentices at Fera. 🎓 Encouraging and supporting the development of soft skills in our apprentices is important as employers and seizing opportunities to discuss apprenticeships in schools is something we actively seek. 🔬 This not only benefits the apprentices themselves giving them the space to practice these skills but generates interest around science apprenticeships at Fera! #NAW24 #YHAAN #apprenticeships
