Ever wondered what a tree’s root system looks like? There is often a misconception that it is a mirror image of the tree's canopy. In reality, it is often more like a wine glass, with the majority of tree roots in the top 600mm of soil and roots can extend well beyond the canopy line. These roots not only help provide stability but being close to the soil surface enables the roots to utilise air, water and nutrients that filter into the soil. Recent images published by Wageningen University & Research provide a fantastic insight into the rooting characteristics of numerous tree and shrub species. Why not take a look? https://lnkd.in/dmBrDQA #TreeResearch #Trees #Treestudy #arboriculture

Pollinators 🤝 rare plants. They just go together, but why? We're studying the relationships between pollinators and rare plants in Pine Hill Preserve, California. This ongoing study will help identify where pollinator resources are shared, and which bees, butterflies, and moths may be partial to specific plant species - enabling us to improve management of rare and native plants that share pollinators in the area. New paper with Fabio Tarena, Claudio Comoglio and Alessandro Condiotto: "Artificial light at night affects fish passage rates in two small-sized Cypriniformes fish". In a flume experiment, artificial light at night reduced passage success and resulted in delayed passage for gudgeon while riffle dace passed at higher rates under the artificial light compared to night treatment. Both results highlight the potential importance of light on fish passage performance at real fishways. Independent of light conditions, individuals of both species also passed faster after repeated trials, demonstrating learning in a fish passage context. 🌿 Did you know that plants have a voice too? 🌿 Recent research has unveiled a fascinating secret of the natural world – stressed plants cry out for help! Scientists have discovered that when plants are under duress, they emit high-frequency sounds that are beyond the range of human hearing. These acoustic cries for assistance are a plant's way of signaling distress, akin to a distress call. This astonishing phenomenon highlights the interconnectedness of all living organisms in our ecosystem. What's even more intriguing is that animals, with their heightened senses, can actually hear these cries. It's like a silent plea for help from the flora to the fauna! To dive deeper into this captivating revelation, check out this insightful article: [Stressed Plants Cry Out for Help](https://lnkd.in/dReyrDJ2) by Hollyanna McCollom. It sheds light on the groundbreaking research and the intricate ways in which the natural world communicates. Pasture-Grazing Herd of Sven-Alf in the middle of Sweden! For full story, 'Play All' this playlist: Natural Experiments with Pasture-Grazing Herd of Sven-Alf Blom, Chief Farming Scientist, Ljungan Systems Field Station, VakeWorks, Torpshammar, Sweden https://lnkd.in/dCgh8DYg Our main objective here is to identify ongoing natural experiments conducted over the last 5 decades at farms around Ljungan Systems Field Station, collectively comprising of several hundred hectares, in order to #test competing #hypotheses (e.g., Food Climate Research Network report from Environmental Change Institute (ECI), University of Oxford https://lnkd.in/dtBR2-X2) around #agroecological #practices to make #Swedish #beef and #dairy more #climate_positive (e.g., #carbon accumulation in #soil and #micronutrient distribution in the plant community ecology, #biodiversity surveys of the #pollinating fauna and #subsoil flora and fauna). Specifically, we want to identify practical pathways that will #improve the '#Climate' status of #Swedish_organic (KRAV) and #Pasture_raised (#Svenkt_Sigill "#naturbeteskött") #beef and #dairy products. See the current warnings of the sad Climate ("Klimat") status of these types of production in the meat guide although they fare well for #biodiversity, #chemical_biocides, #animal_welfare and #antibiotics, at WWF https://lnkd.in/dNCSuaVj https://lnkd.in/dagM2QGU
