Last night was my first time attending a GreenHomeNYC event as a volunteer instead of a participant, and it was worth the trip! Everyone met at the National Grid office in Brooklyn to listen to the night's topic: “Women in Renewable Energy.” Regardless of the event's focus on women's leadership in renewable energy, the event was filled with meaningful career lessons that can apply to anyone looking to transition into a 🌲 “green career.” 🌲 The panel was filled with powerhouses who detailed their professional journeys in their current roles. Here are some of the key takeaways from each speaker: 1️⃣ Don’t limit yourself to a specific title; explore the industry's options. You may surprise yourself with an interesting role that may not be the exact title you were looking for. Continuously build on your technical and transferable skills. Skills like organization and project management are valuable in any field.  ☀ Anmol Sajjad, Director of Solar, Brightcore Energy 2️⃣ Don’t limit yourself to what you believe is your skillset and strengths. Technical skills can be learned and honed throughout your career, especially if you approach your career path with curiosity and flexibility.  ☀ Nathalie Jouanneau, JV Strategy & Portfolio Manager, Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind LLC 3️⃣ Every experience, whether positive or negative, is an opportunity to better understand your strengths, weaknesses, and interests! If you find yourself in a role you don’t like, that’s not wasted time but rather valuable insight that can better prepare you for your next role.  ☀ Alex Wineholt, Director, Project Development, PowerFlex Each panelist provided a ton of resources for professionals to expand their networks, strengthen their skill sets, and learn more about the renewable industry. This shift is igniting incredible job growth across multiple sectors. Think about the staffing needs just in solar and wind power. We'll require skilled engineers, technicians, project managers and sales professionals to design, manufacture and deploy renewable infrastructure globally. The push for energy efficiency is also a major catalyst - we'll see opportunities in smart building systems, monitoring technology, consulting and more as we reduce energy waste. This potential extends even further into emerging fields like carbon capture and hydrogen power. Brilliant minds will be needed to innovate and scale these crucial decarbonization solutions. Here's the best part - green careers offer competitive pay and mobility. You don't have to live in a major city. We must build out distributed renewable energy across Africa, Europe, and beyond. Roles exist for talent to uplift communities through clean power access. I'm particularly enthused by the focus on a just transition emerging in the energy sectors. Widening paths for women, minorities and people from varying backgrounds to lend their vital perspectives as we reshape energy systems. The Green Wave is coming.
