One of the missions of the Black Leadership Group is to empower Black talent. During our initial launch of the Black Leadership Job Board, Robin Landman OBE CCMI, discussed that organisations can seem reluctant to seek out Black talent even though there is no shortage of it. Organisations need to remember that Black individuals don’t want to be the only person in a leadership team, they need to remember that Black individuals don’t want to be the sole representation in a leadership team; they need assurance that their selection is based on merit, not just diversity quotas.

Akolisa (Ako) Ufodike PhD FCPA reflects on how he has seen corporate governance evolve. How have you seen the corporate governance landscape change for Black, African, and Afro-Caribbean leaders throughout your career? >>>I have been a certified director since 2014. In that time, especially since 2020, I have seen a shift towards intentional diversity, which has increased the number of Black directors and executives. It is heartwarming and worthy of celebration. What advice would you give to directors and boards as they work towards equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in governance and the boardroom? >>> Excellent board candidates exist outside of your traditional networks. You can leverage the networks of BIPOC-led organizations plugged into these networks, such as the John Ware Institute. This month of Black History, we acknowledge progress is being made, and at the same recognize the need for more work and representation. #blackhistorymonth #blackhistorymonth2024
To help acknowledge Black History Month, we are honoured to share perspectives from several accomplished Black, African, and Afro-Caribbean leaders and directors who are members of the Institute of Corporate Directors and who contribute to advancing governance in Canada. Looking forward to moderating this all-star panel on #climate and #environmental advocacy, featuring Katie Robinson, Jacqueline Patterson, Susan Hendershot, and Ariana Gonzalez and exploring this important topic together! The #BuildingTogether leadership experience from the Council on Foundations is timely, to say the least. In my own environmental advocacy before joining the foundation world, a regret is not fully appreciating the power of authentic, principled coalitions. Sure, I worked in coalition. But primarily with other organizations that closely shared the same policy goals. Our differences sometimes seemed large, but they were, in context, minute. On so many issues today, generating the influence to overcome powerful opponents requires more than working effectively with those with whom you already share affinity. It also demands figuring out how to expand the circle of affinity. Exploring common goals that exist. Forging, sometimes painfully, the actual relationships that can drive more influential and powerful responses to climate change, water pollution--and much more. This isn't just a "good" thing to do, its a strategic way to win.
Mosaic will proudly team up with The Chisholm Legacy Project: A Resource Hub for Black Frontline Climate Justice Leadership, Interfaith Power & Light, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), and the Pisces Foundation during the Council on Foundations Building Together conference to present the panel Working Across Difference to Build a Climate-Proof Future. Together, we’ll explore innovative work across communities that is addressing inequality and activating unlikely allies to increase influence as we grow a climate movement that can deliver the big, sustainable wins we need.

In 2018, I set out on a quest to identify 277 out of 21,356 Black headteachers in the UK, fueled by a desire for representation and a connection to Black trailblazers in education https://lnkd.in/ekAkk4Vw (new list pending). Fast forward to a recent half term, where I was introduced to the transformative book, “Letter to a Young Generation.” Authored by the inspiring Amanda Wilson, this literary work breathed new life into my purpose, urging Black future leaders to embrace boldness and courage on their journey towards headship. The importance of representation is further emphasised in the context of a low number of Black teachers advancing to middle and senior leadership roles in the UK. This book features letters from Black headteachers across the UK, sharing advice for the next generation. It's a resource for those contemplating leadership, navigating not only why but also how, in the face of underrepresentation within the profession. #EducationLeadership #RepresentationMatters #Inspiration #LeadingEquality

For Black leaders in search of peer support, community care, and creative energy: Register for our 3-part training starting this November! https://lnkd.in/dkbDrSBG When Black folks step into greater power and responsibility, they often inherit old visions and outdated traditions of enacting leadership that don't necessarily align with or fully capture their brilliance, values, and potential. This learning series provides the time, spaciousness, peer support, and resources for Black people in leadership to grow their creativity and vision in order to reground in their purpose and increase their transformative impact on the organizations, communities, and movements they lead. Participants can expect to connect and build community with other Black leaders to create and refine their visions for the future, explore their purpose, and garner ancestral + daily self-care practices to support their personal sustainability. Participants will also unpack how oppression impacts their relationship to power and map out tangible next steps for materializing their visions of leadership.
