BMP's co-executive directors, Frances Kunreuther and Sean Thomas-Breitfeld, explore why aspiration to lead is declining. They explore reasons, including that BIPOC staff are often pushed into leadership to escape negative experiences and how once in leadership roles they lack the support of the board and staff. Annually, the Hispanic Collaborative and the African American Leadership Alliance of Milwaukee (AALAM) publish Well-Being Indexes that offer a comparative view of how Milwaukee’s Black and Brown communities are progressing compared to peer metros. The indexes show that while progress is being made, we need to pick up the pace. Cross-sector collaboration, meaning a true shared vision and responsibility, is required to address our issues at scale to create a stronger Milwaukee region. How have you seen the corporate governance landscape change for Black, African, and Afro-Caribbean leaders throughout your career? >>>I have been a certified director since 2014. In that time, especially since 2020, I have seen a shift towards intentional diversity, which has increased the number of Black directors and executives. It is heartwarming and worthy of celebration. What advice would you give to directors and boards as they work towards equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in governance and the boardroom? >>> Excellent board candidates exist outside of your traditional networks. You can leverage the networks of BIPOC-led organizations plugged into these networks, such as the John Ware Institute. This month of Black History, we acknowledge progress is being made, and at the same recognize the need for more work and representation. #blackhistorymonth #blackhistorymonth2024

One of the missions of the Black Leadership Group is to empower Black talent. During our initial launch of the Black Leadership Job Board, Robin Landman OBE CCMI, discussed that organisations can seem reluctant to seek out Black talent even though there is no shortage of it. Organisations need to remember that Black individuals don’t want to be the only person in a leadership team, they need to remember that Black individuals don’t want to be the sole representation in a leadership team; they need assurance that their selection is based on merit, not just diversity quotas.

I can't begin to tell you how proud I am to work for this organization. When I took the on-boarding training, there were several diversity and bias segments that were so well done & unlike any training I'd ever seen before in such a large organization. Never before had I witnessed such mindful and thoughtful training with interactive sessions to help me question my biases and teach me better communication and questioning skills. Not only does New York Life take care of its clients and policyowners, but it takes care of the people who care for them, too.
