Midwives Impacting Patients and Transforming Maternal Healthcare Midwives play a pivotal role in maternal healthcare, providing essential support and guidance to women throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Their unique blend of medical expertise, emotional support, and advocacy empowers women to make informed decisions about their health and the health of their babies. The importance of midwives cannot be overstated, as they contribute to improved outcomes, increased patient satisfaction, and enhanced overall well-being for both mothers and babies. One of the key ways in which midwives impact patients is through personalized care and continuous support. From the moment a woman discovers she is pregnant to the weeks following childbirth, midwives are there to offer individualized care tailored to the specific needs and preferences of each patient. This includes comprehensive prenatal care, education on pregnancy and childbirth, assistance with labor and delivery, and guidance on newborn care and breastfeeding. Furthermore, midwives are champions of maternal and infant health, promoting evidence-based practices that optimize outcomes for both mothers and babies. Through their knowledge of physiological childbirth, holistic approach to care, and commitment to promoting health and wellness, midwives contribute to reduced rates of interventions, lower rates of cesarean sections, and improved maternal-infant bonding. Beyond the individual patient level, midwives also have a broader impact on maternal healthcare systems and communities. By advocating for policies that support midwifery care, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and addressing disparities in access to care, midwives help create a more equitable and inclusive healthcare system that prioritizes the needs of women and families.

India’s healthcare system often prioritises hospital protocols over the needs of mothers, leading to routine over-medicalisation of pregnancy and childbirth. Non-evidence-based interventions like C-sections, inductions, and episiotomies have become common, and while these practices can save lives when used appropriately, their routine misuse has contributed to higher morbidity rates for both mothers and babies, as well as increased healthcare costs. At Aastrika Foundation, we work to restore the focus to mother-centred care and tackle this problem of ‘Too Much Too Soon’ by advocating for the midwifery model of care, strengthening healthcare capacity, and promoting evidence-based practices because we believe every mother deserves compassionate, dignified and respectful care. Building Relationship It is important to me that the relationships between me, the midwife, and my clients are centered on trust, personalized care, and holistic support throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. It requires building relationships. Midwives provide individualized attention, taking time to understand the unique needs and preferences of the birthing person. Midwives emphasize a holistic approach to care, addressing physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Midwives offer continuous care, meaning they support the birthing person throughout pregnancy, during labor and delivery, and into the postpartum period. Midwives educate and empower birthing people, helping them make informed decisions about their care and childbirth options. Midwives create a supportive and nurturing environment, often encouraging natural childbirth and minimizing unnecessary medical interventions. A strong relationship is built on open communication and trust, allowing birthing people to feel comfortable discussing their concerns and preferences. Would you like more details on any specific aspect of the midwifery relationship/care? Let’s schedule a time to sit and talk over refreshments.

Educators who are informed about a midwife’s full scope of education and training are better prepared to introduce the profession to their students. Midwives are health care providers who can provide care across the lifespan, including pregnancy, labor, postpartum, and menopause. Midwives are experts in well-woman care and work with other health professionals to improve birthing outcomes. #IntroduceMidwifery #EducatorsIntroducingMidwifery #FutureMidwives #AdvocateforMidwifery
