#NatureBasedSolutions have emerged as a promising approach to tackle the #ClimateChange and biodiversity loss crises. But some Indigenous Peoples and local communities are questioning the concept and what it symbolizes. Nature-based solutions are a contentious concept, but they have the potential to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and other societal challenges if done right. This means adopting approaches that respect and incorporate the priorities, cultures, values, and knowledge of Indigenous peoples and local communities. On #IndigenousPeoplesDay, our expert Nicole Jang says we must act on calls from Indigenous Peoples and local communities to adopt more inclusive and respectful engagement strategies that allow for learning and community input from the outset of a project. 🔎 https://lnkd.in/ghQ5iSrz

In my role as Chair of the Premier’s Climate Change Council, I joined Deputy Premier Dr Susan Close at the inaugural Global Nature Positive Summit 2024 in Sydney today. With economic growth gained at the expense of biodiversity loss fast becoming an unsustainable business model, ‘nature positive’ describes stopping biodiversity loss and restoring nature to pre 2020 levels by 2030, with the objective of ongoing ecosystem recovery by 2050. As Australia continues to build prosperity, the end goal is for natural capital to also be factored into national economic measures. #PremiersClimateChangeCouncil #GlobalNaturePositiveSummit #SouthAustralia
