Those of us who work in GBV know well that rape myths are a massive impediment to survivor support and justice. I've said before and will say again that intersectional analyses are critical for supporting GBV survivors, and that means contending with a range of myths, stereotypes, and institutionalized discrimination. What myths are you holding on to? Let's interrogate them with three experts: Kifaya Khraim at Women's Centre for Legal Aid and Counselling - WCLAC, Dr. Nahed Habiballah at Arab American University, and Dr. Gabriella Nassif at The Global Women's Institute (GWI).

Just recently I saw this wonderful initiative by #MyVoiceMyChoice detailing what could be a wonderful step in Women's rights: safe and accessible abortion in the EU. They are going about this through a European Citizens' Initiative, meaning they need all the signatures they can get! For National Indigenous Peoples' Day, I am reflecting on how my responsibilities are actioned; and how I practice them daily as a guest & settler on Treaty 13 territory (following the guidance of the Two Row Wampum Belt treaty). What does being a good guest look like? It means: I) Centering Indigenous-led subject matter expertise and lived experience as a day-to-day practice II) Holding space for mutual respect and reciprocity in nation-to-nation dialogue and relations III) Being a good Aunty, colleague, and neighbour IV) Supporting Indigenous whistleblowers: when Indigenous women write a written report exposing sexual assault and gender-based violence: BELIEVE SURVIVORS. (It's not hard). V) If bad actors try to silence Indigenous voices: then CONFRONT THEM and DOCUMENT. VI) If bad actors try to perpetuate genocide and gender violence against Indigenous service users, colleagues, and friends: then SHOW UP FOR THEM and NAME CORRUPTION. This is not just an ethical issue, this is about legal compliance. VII) Implement the attached Inquiry recommendations to show respect for the work of Elders and Knowledge Keepers, who have 60,000 years of wisdom and technical expertise in sustainability, good governance, and mainstreaming human rights. #TruthandReconciliation #IndigenousRights #UNDRIP #HumanRights #OCAP #InclusiveInnocation #Cdnimm

Marking the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, the statement highlighted the lasting repercussions of slavery, particularly on individuals and societies globally. UN Secretary-General's message on November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women “Violence against women is a horrific violation of human rights, a public health crisis, and a major obstacle to sustainable development. It is persistent, widespread – and worsening. We still live in a male-dominated culture that leaves women vulnerable by denying them equality in dignity and rights. We all pay the price: our societies are less peaceful, our economies less prosperous, our world less just. But a different world is possible.”   As we close the end of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, be aware that today kicks off the annual global advocacy campaign. 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, runs through Human Rights Day on December 10. This year’s theme, UNITE! Invest to Prevent Violence against Women and Girls, emphasizes that everyone has a role to play in protecting women’s and girls’ fundamental right to safety.
