In 2022 alone, Honduran public records showed that 3,093 women were victims of femicides — the killing of a woman because of her gender. Yet 90% of femicides go unpunished. In the face of this abuse, IJM and partners launched a new project in Honduras with support from our offices in El Salvador and Guatemala. This project aims to build capacity to serve victims and survivors of violence, ensuring that Honduras can become a place where women and children can expect to be safe and protected. In November 2023, 80 women and girls from Intibucá, a rural region in Honduras gathered for a groundbreaking forum to discuss the obstacles they face as they seek protection and propose solutions to ease their access to justice and restoration services. 🌷 Learn more: https://ow.ly/5mRj50SALiS

#For The 50 There are almost 50 million people – men, women and children – trapped in modern slavery around the world today. That’s 1 in every 150 people. A total of 1 in 3 victims of human trafficking globally is a child. There are an estimated 12 million children living in modern-day slavery around the world. That's 12 million children who are being controlled by another human being, who have had their freedom taken away. Hope for Justice and Slave-Free Alliance is working to remove children from these unjust, dehumanizing situations. Our outreach teams engage with some of the most vulnerable children, especially those on the streets. We want to bring freedom to every single one of those trafficked, so that every man, woman and child can live a life free from exploitation. 901 BLOC Squad and Metropolitan Family Services each received $50,000 in AAA-ICDR Foundation Rapid Response funding for providing alternatives to law enforcement responses for public safety. Memphis, Tennessee-based 901 BLOC Squad uses conflict resolution to help at-risk youth and their families avoid retaliatory violence. Funding will support youth round tables, facilitate community dialogues, and hold conflict resolution workshops. Chicago-based Metropolitan Family Services works with local community organizations, outreach workers, and peacekeepers to mobilize conflict resolution support services that strengthen families and communities. Funding will support conducting mediations, establishing non-aggression agreements between rival groups, and supporting conflict response and prevention units that respond to crises and give de-escalation support to mitigate violence and victimization among city youth. Millions of women and children around the world are vulnerable to a range of everyday forms of violence. In some countries like Bolivia where 0.04% of sexual violence cases reach a verdict, justice can seem impossible.    But we believe that justice is possible. We’ve seen the impact of the work IJM and its partners accomplished just in the last year when IJM Bolivia achieved an outstanding 13 convictions in three months.      With the help of so many, like you, we know that this is only the beginning, and more changes are possible until we can stop violence against women for good.     Learn more about our work combatting violence against women and children: ijm.org/vawc

🚫Survivors of conflict-related sexual violence are often reluctant to come forward because of stigmatisation, fear of reprisal, or lack of support. ⛓️Breaking the silence around sexual violence is an essential part of the journey for reparation. 🚺In Guatemala, the ‘Abuelas’ movement of indigenous survivors staged a public mock trial to challenge the stigma against survivors and raise awareness around the need to hold perpetrators accountable. 🫂Their efforts led to the creation of a resilient indigenous survivor community, inspiring others to seek justice, and eventually resulting in the conviction of former military members and an order for transformative reparation measures for survivors. 📖Read more about how the ‘Abuelas’ movement overcame obstacles to secure reparation, and other insightful case studies, in our report with the Global Survivors Fund 👇 https://lnkd.in/exAkaf_d

Today is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. This year's theme is "Leave No Child Behind in the Fight Against Human Trafficking" and we recognize that children represent a significant portion of trafficking victims worldwide. We advocate for programs addressing vulnerabilities such as poverty and inequality, and support the allocation of resources to combat child trafficking and the burgeoning issue of online exploitation. ACT Alberta does not provide services to children and youth under the age of 18, as this group is covered under Alberta legislation called the Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act, and government services are responsible for managing their care.
