Cooperatives are not just businesses; they are vehicles of empowerment and catalysts for sustainable development. By promoting inclusive growth, they empower individuals and communities, fostering economic resilience and social equity while ensuring opportunities for marginalized groups. In cooperatives, every member has a voice in decision-making, cultivating a sense of ownership and collective responsibility that encourages collaboration, innovation, and social cohesion. Cooperatives offer open membership in that they do not bar potential members because of their sex. race, creed or religion. They practice mutuality or as the Rochdale Piineers claimed their common bond was of self interest in obtaining certain goods or services from the talents of all members for the benefit of each. Such mutuality leads them to achieve a surplus rather than a profit from their operations - for how can members make a profit out of themselves?q
