2wCooperatives offer open membership in that they do not bar potential members because of their sex. race, creed or religion. They practice mutuality or as the Rochdale Piineers claimed their common bond was of self interest in obtaining certain goods or services from the talents of all members for the benefit of each. Such mutuality leads them to achieve a surplus rather than a profit from their operations - for how can members make a profit out of themselves?q
