Child labor isn’t going away. In fact, it’s on the rise. And it’s not limited to some faraway land (though distance doesn’t make it any less heinous). Child labor is happening in the United States. Further, it’s not just migrant children who are working, often in dangerous conditions (though ethnicity and country of origin don’t make it any less heinous). Children who are U.S. citizens also are laboring. Surprised? Many are. June 12 is the UN World Day Against Child Labor. “You may choose to look the other way, but you can never say again that you did not know.” - William Wilberforce. Following the efforts of 1807, slavery was finally abolished in 1833 and made illegal by the Human Rights Act of 1998. However, despite these advancements, modern slavery persists. In 2021, an estimated 50 million people were living in situations of modern slavery according to the Global estimate for modern slavery. Approximately 27.6 million of those people were in forced labour and 22 million in forced marriages. What action can you take can we collectively take to prevent this? ✅ Report such acts to authorities or relevant organizations. ✅ Do not engage the services of underage children or individuals in exploitative conditions. ✅ Ensure fair compensation for workers based on their labor worth. ✅ Stay informed about the signs and forms of modern slavery. ♻️Share and follow for more Sources: 🎥 The Scottish Parliament 📈Walk Free #modernslavery #governance #politics

Despite their potential to worsen human rights issues, major sporting events can also spur positive change. By shining a light on these problems, they encourage conversations about labour rights, human trafficking, and exploitation, prompting governments, organizations, and the public to demand action and better protection for vulnerable populations. Increased awareness about these issues, led to increased pressure on host countries and event organizers to address labour rights and human rights concerns. As a response to these concerns, some event organizers and host countries have taken steps to improve working conditions, enhance transparency, and strengthen safeguards for workers. These efforts include initiatives to monitor and assess labour conditions, implement ethical sourcing practices, and collaborate with human rights organizations. #EndHumanTrafficking #LetsTalkModernSlavery

I am motivated by #Hope of a better, fairer, peaceful, safer, equal and healthier #future – for our #people and our #MotherEarth.
In recognition of today’s #InternationalDayfortheAbolitionofSlavery, I applaud the work of anti-trafficking organizations around the world that are committed to deepening and expanding international efforts to end modern slavery. Modern slavery is a crime of economic opportunity that impacts millions of people and intersects with global trends like migration, organized crime, and global business operations. According to the International Labour Organization, more than 40 million people worldwide are victims of different forms of modern slavery. In addition, more than 150 million children are subject to child labor – a figure that represents almost one in every ten children around the world. To end this crime, we must work across sectors and boundaries to take on entire systems perpetuating modern slavery. We are all called upon to use this day as an opportunity to learn about modern slavery. This is a problem that can be solved, but in order to solve it; we must know about the problem and care that our fellow humans are being denied their #humanrights. #DayfortheAbolitionofSlavery #HumanityForAll United Nations Human Rights Watch United Nations Human Rights

This includes advocating for labor rights, social protection, fair recruitment, and stronger enforcement against forced labor and forced marriage. Join us in supporting these critical policy priorities to create a world free from exploitation. Together, we can make a significant impact in the global fight against modern slavery by 2030. #SocialImpact #PolicyChange https://lnkd.in/gnvKBN8W

The human rights terrain continues to shift in Canada as the potential grounds of discrimination expand, leading to greater risks for employers. On Friday, February 23, as part of our Cross-Canada Labour and Employment webinar series, Catherine Coulter, Anthony Cole, Colleen Hoey, Fatimah Khan and Salim Visram will explore the human rights shift under Canada’s Modern Slavery Legislation, along with potential implications for Ontario employers. They will also discuss the Ontario Court of Appeal’s recent ruling that the provincial government's Bill 124, which aimed to limit wage increases in public sector workplaces, is unconstitutional under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms to the extent that it applied to unionized workers. Today is the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, as designated by the United Nations. This day serves as an opportunity for governments, organisations and individuals worldwide to reaffirm their commitment to ending modern slavery. Currently, no government is on track to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goal 8.7 of ending modern slavery, forced labour and human trafficking by 2030. Snowdrop Project will continue to advocate for systemic change which creates a fair and compassionate system for survivors, to ensure that every survivor can access the support they need to rebuild their lives. https://lnkd.in/exaDxMVH
