December 2 was the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. As Chair of the Communications and Capacity Building Working Group for the Commonwealth 8.7 Network, I endorse this position statement to encourage a multi-stakeholder based approach to ending modern slavery. The human rights violation of slavery is a complex web of violence against humanity and is the outcome of a mix of globalisation, wide-spread poverty, cultural and racial discrimination to name a few. So, to combat it we need international cooperation, collaboration, good business and government practice, the rule of law and the long-term investment in time and materials - from governments, business, academic, media, civil society and individual choices. December 2nd marks the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, a day dedicated to eradicating the inhumane practice that continues to plague our world. It's a stark reminder that slavery is not a thing of the past but a horrifying reality for over 40 million people globally, according to the United Nations. Modern slavery & human trafficking are not just gross violations of human rights; they are also a multi-billion-dollar business, with global profits estimated to exceed $150 billion. This illicit trade thrives in the shadows, exploiting the most vulnerable among us, including one in four children worldwide. The impact of modern slavery on global workforces is profound. It undermines fair competition, distorts labor markets, & perpetuates poverty & inequality. It also poses significant risks to businesses, who may unknowingly have slavery within their supply chains, damaging their reputation & exposing them to legal penalties. As we commemorate this day, let us not forget that the fight against modern slavery is far from over. It requires collective action, vigilance, & commitment. December 2nd, marks the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery.  Despite its abolition in the 19th century, forms of modern slavery persist worldwide today - including forced labour, human trafficking, child labour, debt bondage and forced marriage. On this day, we reflect on the ongoing denial of human rights that slavery entails.  Though past abolitionists made progress, much work remains to fully eradicate slavery globally.  As global citizens, we all have a role to play in ending modern slavery.   We can report suspected trafficking, demand laws to close loopholes enabling exploitation, advocate for the oppressed, and insist on supply chain transparency from companies.   Working together through vigilance and collective action, we can break the chains of injustice. But it requires tenacity, compassion and solidarity with those still enslaved.   By taking a stand against modern slavery, we can build a world of freedom and human rights. We need to check that companies we deal with have Anti-Modern Slavery policies, that if someone indicates they need help, we report it and that we are suspicious if a service e.g. a nail bar or a car wash is very cheap. #modernslavery #diversityandinclusion #diversity #diversitymatters Teresa Norman

This is an important day. I heard a startling statistic that there are more people in modern slavery now than there were at the height of the era of slavery. Today, we observe the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, a day that holds deep historical significance and prompts us to confront the shadows of our past while addressing the challenges that persist today. Looking back to December 2, 1949, the United Nations General Assembly took a significant step forward by adopting the Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others. This marked a pivotal moment in our collective journey toward eradicating the grave injustice of slavery. However, as we stand here today, the echoes of this dark history still reverberate, urging us to take meaningful action. The purpose of this day is not just to remember history but to shine a light on the present. Slavery, in various forms, continues to persist – from human trafficking to forced labour. The importance lies in our shared responsibility to raise awareness and work towards a world where no one is subjected to such atrocities. So, what can each of us do? It starts with education. Take the time to learn about the different faces of modern-day slavery, understand its nuances, and recognise its presence in various corners of the globe. Advocacy is another powerful tool. Your voice matters. Use it to raise awareness in your community and urge policymakers to strengthen measures against slavery. It’s a fight that requires collective effort and commitment. Grassroots Movements: The Heartbeat of Peacebuilding Civil society organizations and NGOs are at the heart of peacebuilding efforts. These grassroots movements mobilize communities, advocate for human rights, and provide essential services in conflict zones. Today is the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. Although the 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the United States on December 6, 1865, Modern-day slavery is more prevalent than many realize. It is estimated that roughly 50 million people are trapped in slavery worldwide. Modern-day slavery is defined as an individual being exploited by others, for personal or commercial gain. Whether tricked, coerced, or forced, they have lost their freedom. This includes but is not limited to human trafficking, forced labor, and debt bondage. Those who are trapped in modern-day slavery are entirely stripped of their human rights and dignity. It is important to keep in mind that roughly a quarter of all victims of modern slavery are children. Here at Paving the Way, we believe that every child has inherent value and worth and that everyone must play a role in ending child exploitation and trafficking. An important way to be involved in the fight against human trafficking is to spread the word! Evil can reign freely when there is nobody correcting lies. An important form of abolition is awareness.
