🌟 IPNLF Think Tank 2024: A Global Collaboration for Small-Scale Fisheries 🌟 We brought together over 40 participants from 14 countries, including experts, international buyers, and retailers like Woolworths, Seafood Souq, ICV Africa, Anova Seafood, and Tri Marine. Indonesian processors and exporters such as NUSATUNA, PT Harta Samudra, PT SMS, and PT Nutrindo Fresfood Internasional joined forces with technical and financial experts from South Africa, Maldives, Canada, Portugal, Australia, and Indonesia. Craig Turley, IPNLF Fisheries Director, said it best: “While many organisations are developing groundbreaking technologies in isolation, true innovation comes from collaboration. This collective effort has made the vision of a technology-rich, environmentally sustainable small-scale fishery a reality.” This invitation-only event fostered productive dialogue among technology providers, fisheries stakeholders, private sector representatives, donors, and impact investors. Importantly, small-scale fishers were at the heart of these discussions, ensuring their voices and needs were central to the solutions. You can learn more in our press release:

🌊 Key Takeaways from the Seafood Alliance for Legality and Traceability (SALT) Forum: The Path Forward in Combating IUU Fishing and Promoting Sustainable Seafood 🐟 🔹 Holistic & Incremental Approaches Common Lexicon: As Alexa Cole from NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration mentioned, a unified language is crucial. When we achieve that, we will finally have the basis to write a common "doctrine" (this was a great insight from Tony Long) to ensure better cooperation across all the actors involved in combating #IUU fishing. Transparency & Shared Data: Mr. Long also emphasized the need for open, interoperable data to enhance transparency and traceability. Co-Design & Co-Creation: The principle of creating products and solutions together with the end-users, as Jenny Barker and FishWise exemplified in their traceability principles, promotes a more effective and user-friendly approach. 🔹 Social Responsibility & Human Rights It's clear that we cannot discuss supply chain traceability without addressing the human aspect. Ensuring social responsibility and human rights is paramount, both for ethical and practical reasons. The best way forward about this is listening to the voices from the field. Including the workers, the pratictioners, and all the other stakeholders in the co-creating of silo-busting solutions to end IUU fishing. Alexander Min, does that sound familiar to you? 😊 More here: Event site: https://lnkd.in/edCV-jQ8 My article about the importance of the bottom-up approach and listening to the voices from the field: https://lnkd.in/e4UcGXJ7

Last week was Aquaculture Week in Australia: We had a great time at the Aqua Farm conference in Surfers Paradise, discussing our perspective on the "Future of Aquaculture" with international industry leaders. It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm in this sector (and meeting great people and learning from some really interesting talks). At the same time, in Sydney, there was a great opportunity to get an update on the opportunities in this area with the Ocean Impact Organisation, Blue Economy CRC and especially with Australia's most innovative Aquaculture business Aquacultr as part of the Climate Action Week Sydney. It's evident that future technology developments in this field hold immense potential, and we firmly believe it will serve as a pivotal technology platform for food manufacturing in the (not so far) future. The time has come to shine a spotlight on Aquaculture in Australia and to recognise that this is a growth opportunity for our economy that is highly undervalued at the moment. We are excited to be at the forefront of this development (and we are glad that we are not entirely alone). #Aquaculture #FutureOfFood #Innovation #Australia #futureofseafood Jose Manuel Fernandez Polanco, Roy Palmer, Lourdes Gant 🦋, Geoffrey Bell, Nick Chiarelli, Elisa-Marie Dumas, Mathew Goddard

Dr Hilario Murua, Senior Scientist at the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) spoke on how effective collaboration between industry, science, and the conservation community, is driving transformative vessel to-plate transparency. The ISSF favours a multifaceted approach, including the adoption of tools such as the ISSF ProActive Vessel Register (PVR) and the Vessels in Other Sustainability Initiatives (VOSI) list. Vessels of all types can apply for PVR listing to foster supply chain transparency; meanwhile, the number of vessels on the VOSI has more than tripled since its creation in 2020. In conjunction with ISSF conservation measures for participating seafood companies (all of which are subject to independent audits), they jointly offer a comprehensive assessment of supply chain sustainability pledges, and therefore mapping a course toward a more environmentally responsible tuna fisheries. Traceability is the key. Last week Sea Pact participated in the 4th Annual Latin American Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture Summit hosted by COMEPESCA AC and Pesca Con Futuro. During the Summit, we joined Seafood Legacy and COMEPESCA AC on a panel facilitated by the Walton Family Foundation to discuss pre-competitive collaborations addressing sustainability challenges. Some takeaways from the Summit: - There are A LOT of different initiatives driving impactful sustainability outcomes across Latin America, from technology uptake to supply chain collaborations, many good things happening on the ground/water. -Prioritization is key to the success of any collaboration addressing seafood sustainability. There are many issues facing environmental and social responsibility and any path forward will require organization to increase impact and prevent scope-creep, and may vary depending on where stakeholders sit in the value chain. -Bottom-up (producer/harvester/fisher) solutions to sustainability challenges, along with market engagement efforts (top down), are vital successful long-term sustainability outcomes. Thank you again to the organizers for such a great event!

FAD fishing can be made more sustainable if Fish Aggregating Devices are built to be non-entangling as well as biodegradable. FADs also must also be managed by fleets and monitored by RFMOs and other oversight agencies. Learn about FAD management: https://lnkd.in/dti6ZECN
