Only a few days to the opening of our our next special exhibition: 200 years of Reederei F. Laeisz On deck2 of the museum from March the 21st to September the 15th 2024. It all began in Hamburg in 1824 with a business selling top hats. Within a few decades, this became one of the most important and today oldest shipping companies in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. The House of F. Laeisz soon maintained shipping connections all over the world and was involved in the founding of other well-known shipping companies, including Hamburg Süd and Hapag. The company became well known for its Flying-P-Liners, fast sailing ships that were famous and admired until the 1930s, especially on the wheat voyage to Australia and the route around Cape Horn to the west coast of South America. Later, the shipping company entered the trade in bananas and other refrigerated cargoes. Today, F. Laeisz is fully focussed on the future. Large car ferries, bulkers and gas tankers characterise the fleet. Liquefied gas transport is becoming increasingly important, as are modern dual-fuel drives and the reduction of CO2 emissions for new generations of ships. The company is certain that the future will belong to chemicals such as green methanol and green ammonia as fuels for large ocean-going vessels. #maritime #history #museum #hamburg

It is nevertheless considered a seaport ⚓, as it can be called at by seagoing vessels with a draught of up to 15 meters. Smaller cruise vessels, including older "pots" from the AIDA fleet 🛳️, often moor at Cruise Center Altona. The environmentally friendly facilities of the Cruise Center Altona are particularly noteworthy 🌱. Since 2016, ships can be 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿⚡𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲. The shore power supply allows the ships to switch off their engines while they are docked, which leads to a significant reduction in emissions. The Cruise Center Altona opened in 2011 with a quay length of 360 meters 📏. Ships up to 300 meters long can dock there. In 2023, SFT delivered 2 foam filled Ocean Guard Fenders with a diameter of 3000 x 4500mm and a weight of 4,500 kg. The terminal impresses with its central location 🌍: the famous fish market 🎣 and the Oevelgönne museum harbor 🏛️ are within easy walking distance, allowing travelers to experience Hamburg's maritime flair up close. In an oped I published on June 23 in Greece’s oldest newspaper, Estia, I argue that #GreekShipping is currently undergoing a huge turnaround as Greek shipowners are in the process of overhauling their fleet with record number of new builds. Entitled, “Energy is driving developments in Greek Shipping” I describe the huge changes which are now taking place . The driving force, as it became apparent in the latest #Posidonia2024 shipping exhibition which took place early in June at the Metropolitan Expo in Athens, is the need for low carbon vessels which comply with latest IMO environmental standards and are more energy efficient. A total of 384 vessels of Greek ownership are currently being build, mostly in Chinese and South Korean shipyards, with a total capacity of 34 million dwt, up 60% than last year number wise and with a 79% increase in terms of capacity. According to market analysts, this is a paradigm shift especially if we consider that the average capacity is 88.748 dwt as compared to the global average of 62.237 dwt. Operating new, #lowcarbonemission and more #energyefficientvessels will no doubt give Greek shipowners and their operating companies a huge competitive advantage. Since very shortly vessels with low carbon footprint will be preferred, especially by environmentally minded international companies, in shipping goods and commodities across the oceans. https://lnkd.in/d96RSMXt

Silent Force - The Impact of Supply Chains on Social Development By Daniel R. Schnaider, Wisefy The caravels, innovative 15th-century ships, marked a crucial turning point in the history of navigation and global trade, ushering in the era of great discoveries. With their agile design and long-distance capability, these vessels enabled European explorers like Vasco da Gama and Christopher Columbus to venture beyond known coastlines, reaching the Americas, India, and beyond. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐬𝐥𝐨-𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐧-𝐂𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 Today, 31 October, Gotlandsbolaget takes over the line between Oslo and Copenhagen from DFDS. Extensive investments are now being made to upgrade the experience on board, with a focus on the cabins. In June, Gotlandsbolaget and DFDS announced that the Danish shipping company is selling the line between Oslo and Copenhagen to Gotlandsbolaget for approximately DKK 400 million. The deal includes the cruise ferries CROWN SEAWAYS and PEARL SEAWAYS (host ship for the 2025 Shippax Ferry Conference) and roughly 800 employees work in the business, which is now changing hands. The line had 700,000 passengers in 2023, and the goal is to increase the number in the coming years. An important part of the investment is extensive investment in upgrading the ships where the main focus is on the cabins, but other spaces on board will also be reviewed. For the passengers, most things will be the same at first, as the development will take place step by step. For example, bookings will take place on the DFDS booking page also in 2025. The line will initially be marketed under the DFDS brand, but a new name and brand is under development. 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 https://lnkd.in/dF4Bg3yJ

The momentum is building up until the 6th of August, with only 8️⃣ 8️⃣ days left until the first Aurora Class Christening at China Merchant Heavy Industry 🎉 We're counting down the days! When our first Aurora Class vessel enters commercial sailing, it will be the most sustainable PCTC sailing right from the start. With around 58% lower emissions than a standard PCTC, we're setting a new standard in sustainable transportation. After the inaugural Christening, get ready for more! Like pearls on a string, the remaining 11 out of 12 Aurora Class vessels will be delivered until 2027, marking a remarkable chapter in our maritime legacy. At Höegh Autoliners, we are #sailingforsustainability on a clear path towards our goal of achieving net-zero emissions while delivering high-quality ocean transportation solutions to global customers – many within the automotive industry. #HöeghAutoliners #PathToZero #AuroraClass 🚢

Consumers can weigh many factors when deciding on a cruise—port location and appeal being two. Recent research among active cruisers from five key markets demonstrated a strong preference for setting sail within one's own global region. Scroll for more insights and find the full report here: https://lnkd.in/ev_BaBmC 🌊 Look out for Christian Savelli and CLIA | Cruise Lines International Association digging deeper into more of the latest cruise industry research at Seatrade Cruise Global next week.
