Yesterday 68th GEF Council approved global iCOAST Programme aiming towards sustainable tourism. The programme will endeavor to work with countries and relevant stakeholders towards driving sustainable practices to mitigate environmental impacts of tourism.
Exciting news from the #GEFcouncil68 as they approve the iCOAST program (Integrated Collaborative Approaches to Sustainable Tourism), aimed at boosting sustainable tourism in 14 countries, with a focus on Sustainable Tourism. This innovative program, developed over a year in collaboration with countries, GEF implementing Agencies, and various stakeholders, seeks to address the challenges posed by unsustainable practices and pollution in the tourism sector, which threaten vital ecosystems. Tourism plays a crucial role in creating new jobs and driving economies, particularly in small island developing States. However, the sector's negative impact on ecosystems necessitates a shift towards sustainable practices. iCOAST will be implemented by a coalition of organisations including the Inter-American Development Bank EBRD,FAO, UNDP, UN Environment Programme , UNIDO and WWF, in collaboration with UN Tourism, the The Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions and Minamata Convention on Mercury Secretariats and other partners. The program, involving governments and tourism sectors of #Belize, #DominicanRepublic, #Egypt, #Honduras, #Indonesia, #Jamaica, #Maldives, #Mexico,#Morocco, #Seychelles, #Tanzania, #TrinidadTobago, #Türkiye, and #Vanuatu, will focus on enhancing policies and regulations, facilitating funding access, reducing tourism-related supply chain footprints, and promoting global knowledge sharing. Key areas of focus within the supply chains addressed by iCOAST include #cooling, #food and #beverages, #plastics, #construction, #textiles and #furnishings, and #electronics. Collaborative efforts across these sectors aim to drive sustainable practices and mitigate the environmental impact of tourism. Global Environment Facility

With the development of Chinese society, the demand for rural tourism, surrounding tourism, and suburban tourism is increasing. The new type of tourist attraction integrating 'agriculture + culture + tourism + technology + research and study' is gradually becoming a development trend. The project in Henan is a typical deep integration of agriculture and tourism. This project not only brings employment opportunities but also makes positive contributions to local agricultural production and cultural heritage. https://lnkd.in/gdx8qZii

Thailand introduced the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy concept, which is a post-pandemic growth strategy where science, innovation and technology are applied to promote efficient usage of resources, maintain and restore ecosystems and reduce waste. One example is Rayong durian farm, where the visitors potentially can also get to understand how the BCG concept is applied there. How Mediterranean Islands Can Lead in Circular Economy Practices 🌍 🌟 The Mediterranean is more than just a tourist destination; it’s a testing ground for #CircularEconomy innovation. Insular regions like Corsica, Sardinia, and the Balearic Islands face unique challenges, but they also have unique opportunities to lead the way. 📋 What Makes Islands Ideal for CE Leadership? - Self-Contained Systems: Their geographic isolation forces efficient resource management. - Tourism Revenue: Seasonal income can fund sustainable infrastructure. - Cultural Heritage: Strong local traditions promote reuse, repair, and sustainable practices. 💡 Actionable Strategies: 1️⃣ Circular Tourism Models: Develop eco-friendly travel packages and certifications. 2️⃣ Community-Driven Innovation: Empower locals to adopt circular practices through education and incentives. 3️⃣ Knowledge Sharing: Use islands as case studies for global sustainability lessons. 🌿 The Mediterranean can set an example for other regions, showing that circular systems are not only possible but profitable. What’s one innovative practice you’ve seen in island communities? #Leadership #CircularEconomy #Mediterranean

Did you know that the Ankole cattle are not only a symbol of Uganda’s rich cultural heritage but also an emerging attraction in the country’s tourism industry? Their distinctive long horns and graceful stature make them a unique sight for visitors. Here are some ways in which the Ankole cattle are contributing to Uganda’s tourism: Agro-Tourism: Farmers in regions like Kiruhura district are transforming their farms into agro-tourism centers, capitalizing on the breed’s uniqueness and strength. Tourists can engage in activities like learning how to milk cows, grazing, controlling pests and diseases, and making butter or ghee. Cultural Significance: The Ankole cattle are deeply intertwined with the culture of the Bahima people, an ethnic pastoral group. This cultural aspect adds depth to the tourism experience, allowing visitors to gain insight into the local traditions and lifestyles. Economic Impact: The presence of Ankole cattle has spurred the development of dairies to market milk from these cows, promoting the value of the breed and contributing to the local economy. Conservation Efforts: There’s a growing recognition of the need to conserve the Ankole cattle, not just for their economic value but also to preserve the biodiversity and cultural identity they represent. Crafts and Souvenirs: The elegant horns of the Ankole cattle are used to create jewelry and decorations, which are popular with tourists as unique souvenirs from Uganda. The third RAINFOREST case study is in Cyprus! The Cyprus case study within the RAINFOREST project is driven by the goal of fostering sustainable food consumption within the tourism industry, a pivotal element for the island's economy. This initiative is not only vital for enhancing biodiversity conservation but also acts as a catalyst for sustainable transformation of multiple sectors involved in the tourism food supply chain. By engaging in a comprehensive system analysis of the current situation—through data collection and dialogue with key stakeholders — the case study aims to assess the environmental and socio-economic impacts of existing food consumption patterns. The most exciting insight thus far has been the identification of seasonal tourist flow and food consumption patterns within this sector. Once this step is completed, the aim will shift in finding alternative, more sustainable consumption pathways, taking into account both the domestically produced and imported food commodities that are consumed by tourists.

Balearic Islands' Bold Legislation for Sustainability 🌴 The Balearic Islands 🌊 are redefining sustainable tourism. Their progressive legislation is a shining example of how #CircularEconomy (CE) principles can be applied to tourism-driven economies. 🎯 What’s working? 1️⃣ Ban on single-use plastics 🥤 to reduce marine pollution. 2️⃣ Tax incentives for hotels adopting eco-friendly practices ♻️. 3️⃣ Support for local startups innovating with green technology 🌱. 🔍 The challenge? Balancing economic growth 💰 with environmental sustainability 🌍. Tourism is seasonal, creating fluctuations in waste production and resource use. 💡 How can we ensure long-term success? - Integrate CE into ALL sectors, not just tourism. - Create year-round initiatives to reduce waste and resource strain. - Involve local communities in policy-making and implementation. 🌟 The Balearic Islands are proof that bold policies lead to measurable results. Can other regions follow suit? What policies do you think are crucial for sustainable tourism? #SustainableTourism #CircularEconomy #BalearicIslands
