Having been back home for a month now, I can see the deep impact of this life-changing experience. A typical day on site began with a challenging hike up and down the mountain, followed by demanding tasks under the African sun, alongside enriching interactions with the workers—learning and growing together. Living in a remote area with minimal supplies was challenging, but I personally enjoyed the healthy lifestyle of sleeping early and waking up early for work, breathing clean air, eating the simple produce that nature provides, and enjoying stunning sunsets over Lake Kivu. The connections formed within the Sidara group and with the local community were priceless. I'll always treasure the children greeting us at the gate each day, their innocent calls echoing in my memory. The culmination of our efforts at the bridge's inauguration marked a crucial moment—a time when the river will no longer take lives. This experience has reshaped my perspective on engineering, humanitarian work, and life in general.
