The conclusion of 2023 definitely highlights the significant role that logistics is playing in Mexico's Nearshoring boom. Intense competition among carriers is observed as they fiercely compete for dominance in the escalating transportation of goods between Mexico and the U.S., and that includes adding intermodal services. The competition was triggered by the merger of Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern into CPKC, creating the first single-line railroad spanning the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Various companies, including CPKC, Union Pacific Railroad, CN, and Grupo México Transportes, have launched competing intermodal services. BNSF Railway has recently entered the competition in partnership with J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. Together, they plan to launch a new U.S.-Mexico intermodal service on January 1, promising faster shipping speeds. The service will operate between major Mexican markets and the U.S. and will be one day faster than existing routes, with an alternative route through El Paso, Texas. It looks like we will keep seeing more collaborative efforts and innovations among carriers to shape the future of cross-border transportation in the U.S. and Mexico. La suite de l’explication de notre memorandum est disponible! ➡️Frederick Speaks #2 : c'est par ici.
In the second part of our series, Frederick De Backer, Head of Public Affairs at Lineas, highlights another key topic from our memorandum: the need for a level playing field between rail and road freight. Currently, road freight in Belgium is supported with many millions of euros per year, for example through tax exemptions for diesel, while rail freight receives minimal financial backing. This gap becomes even more pronounced as rail freight has to bear significant costs for essential safety upgrades on its own. We're also advocating for the establishment of training centers for train drivers and ground personnel - similar to the training support available for truck drivers and shipping crews. By addressing these imbalances, we can create a more balanced and sustainable future for rail freight. Let’s drive positive change together! 💪

Hong Kong-based containership owner Seaspan Corporation and German container shipping major Hapag-Lloyd enter into a partnership agreement to retrofit and convert five 10,100 TEU container ships powered by conventional MAN S90 engines to dual-fuel engines capable of operating on methanol. Following the engine retrofit, the vessels will continue to be on long-term charter from Seaspan to Hapag-Lloyd. The vessels scheduled for retrofits are the Seaspan Amazon, Seaspan Ganges, Seaspan Thames, Seaspan Yangtze and Seaspan Zambezi. The retrofit is expected to take approximately 80-90 days per vessel starting in the first quarter of 2026. The total investment is estimated at around USD 120 million for the five units. MAN Energy Solutions will deliver the retrofit solutions, and each conversion can result in a CO2 reduction of 50,000 –70,000 tonnes each year when operating on green methanol, according to Seaspan.

Rail freight is the future of sustainable transport. A bold claim? At Lineas, we believe it's more than that - it's a necessity. That's why we have set out in a memorandum the key strategies to ensure that rail freight remains competitive. Today, Frederick De Backer, our Head of Public Affairs, shares some important takeaways from this memorandum: 1️⃣ Creating a level playing field across the sector Currently, some of our competitors still receive significant state support, which can create challenges for market competition. We believe in fostering a fair and transparent environment in which there are no distortions. 2️⃣ Encouraging equal access to key facilities While Antwerp’s shunting yard is open to all railway operators, similar access isn't always available in neighboring countries. By promoting reciprocity at these facilities, we can build a more balanced and competitive European rail network. Stay tuned for more insights from our memorandum!

Tout est résumé dans ce post. En ce début d’année 2024, l’intermodal souffre de l’inflation ferroviaire (et des prix en fortes hausses), de problèmes d’infrastructure et de baisses des subventions accordées par les États. This post sums it all up. As we enter 2024, the intermodal sector is suffering from rail inflation, infrastructure issues and falling state subsidies.
#intermodal is facing tough times. Low demand, quality deficits and rising prices in rail, combined with declining public support despite the political will for #greenmobility, present a challenging picture. Hupac remains committed to its #strategy for the future of #sustainable combined transport. ✔ We constantly adapt our #network to market demand. ✔ We are improving #productivity with longer and heavier trains. ✔ We promote open railway markets for more #quality and creative solutions. ✔ We invest in #digitaltransformation and #terminalcapacity in Italy, Germany and Spain. A big THANK YOU to our CUSTOMERS, PARTNERS and EMPLOYEES across Europe and beyond! #intermodaltransport, #railfreight, #greenmobility #sustainabletransport, #climatechange

Global ports operator DP World has partnered with Brazilian railway operator Rumo to build a terminal at Brazil’s Santos port – one of the largest ports in Latin America – to manage 12.5 million tonnes of cargo annually, as it expands its footprint in the continent. The total cost for the construction of the new complex is estimated to be 2.5 billion Brazilian real ($500 million), according to Rumo’s estimates. It will be financed through a combination of Rumo's resources, loans, and potential strategic partnerships, Government of Dubai Media Office said on Tuesday. Once finished, the new terminal will be capable of handling 9 million tonnes of grains and 3.5 million tonnes of fertilisers annually. It aims to position the port of Santos as Brazil’s main trade gateway and a key hub for South America. #Brazil #Railway #Cargo
