Brilliant event (on this sunny!) morning at The Century Club with SI Partners Global and Grace Blue Partnership, exploring how to build a portfolio career as a Non Exec Chair, hosted by Joe Hine.
Over the past 5 years there has been a 300% increase in Private Equity investment in the digital, media and marketing world – with an average of 5 acquisitions before exit.
This has meant new opportunities for former Founders, investors and experienced CEOs/CFOs as PE firms look to build boards that can support management teams to reach their goals. Not operational talent – but an experienced view that can guide (and, hold feet to the fire!).
Some unique learnings from the panel:
- Increasingly PE are thinking about who the board might be prior to investment
- The challenge of building a board with alignment
- Bringing the ability to be transformative to the table
The cost of hiring new talent is higher than retaining your current team. Invest in retention to nurture and grow your top performers.

I can’t stress this enough. The cost of losing a talented individual is immeasurable. Besides all the obvious direct costs like hiring and training a replacement, lost productivity and team cohesion, and the impact of all that tribal knowledge disappearing. Think of all the things that person takes with them to their new employer, who could very well be your competitor: knowledge of your internal processes and procedures; knoweldge of your cost structure and pricing practices; knowledge of your customer base; and knowledge of other employees who may be recruited.
People rarely leave because they don’t like the company. They usually leave because they’re dissatisfied with management in some way. When was the last time you had an in-depth heart-to-heart conversation with your employees? Do you truly know how they feel about you and the organization you both work for? Do your employees look happy to be at work? In my experience, most managers have no idea the true feelings their employees have towards them, and towards the business.
Get to know your employees outside of your plans and expectations for their role at work. These are human beings with aspirations and dreams. Do you know what those are? Is there anything you can do to help fulfill them? You don’t have to be best friends with your employees. In fact, as a manager, that would probably be detrimental to your leadership. However, there’s nothing stopping you from getting to know them as people instead of just as employees. Ask about their family. Ask about what they like to do when they’re not at work. Find out what makes your people tick.
Once you start looking at them as people, instead of employees, your dynamic changes completely. And all kinds of possibilities open up for more collaborative communication.

Last week, I had the privilege of attending my first TIDE event in New York, and it was an experience unlike other alternatives conference I’ve been to.
This wasn’t just a series of panels with speakers going through the motions—each session felt like a thoughtful, engaging conversation among panelists who had pre-existing and sometimes long-standing relationships. Though I currently operate within a niche area of alternatives—early-stage biotech VC—I’m always eager to learn more about how LPs approach the broader alternatives industry and balance their portfolio construction. At TIDE, the synergy between the panelists’ insights made it feel like I was sitting in on an enlightening conversation, rather than a standard high-level overview of each panelist's organization.
One highlight for me was the CIO panel with Shoaib Khan, CFA, CPA and Steven Meier, CFA, FRM. They took the time to share their career journeys in detail, from the very beginning to where they are now. It made the discussion feel much more personal and insightful, especially for the audience, which was a mix of GPs and LPs at various stages of their own career paths. For those earlier in their careers, it was particularly helpful to hear how they navigated their progression.
I look forward to attending more The Investment Diversity Exchange (TIDE) events in the future and want to thank Grace Reyes for putting together such a high-quality and educational event!
