#OnThisDay in 2007 the UNESCO World Heritage Committee inscribed the Sydney Opera House on the World Heritage register, recognising the sites outstanding universal value to humanity. 👏 The building’s listing recognises its innovative architecture, engineering, and construction, described as a “masterpiece of human creative genius.” “Its significance is based on its unparalleled design and construction,” UNESCO stated “It is a daring and visionary experiment that has had an enduring influence on the emergent architecture of the late 20th century.” Central to our listing is the important balance of this building as both an architectural monument, and a cutting-edge performing art centre. To retain this authenticity, it is important to maintain the Opera House’s use and function. This cultural heritage value plays an important role in our efforts to contribute to a more equitable and sustainable future, in line with our commitments to the UN Global Goals – in particular, UN Global Goal 11, to recognise and celebrate the significance of heritage places and the importance of protecting the world’s cultural and natural heritage.

"According to the exhibition, many Brutalist buildings “face widespread public aversion” and are dubbed as “ugly” structures globally. However, there is simultaneously a growing recognition of their cultural value, sparking preservation efforts. In fact, the exhibition explores the options these structures are left with, be it renovation or demolition, and the challenges accompanying these decisions." Brutalism enthusiasts and critics alike should visit our latest exhibition, Capital Brutalism! Learn more about it in this article from Arch Daily.

⚪ Heritage Alert : Update ⚪ Following the 2019 #HeritageAlert, ICOMOS, ICOMOS Danmark and ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on #20thcenturyheritage (ISC20C) welcome recent indications that plans for the demolition of the internationally recognised modernist #VikingShipHall of the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde have changed. 🏆The winning design of the architectural competition proposes a separate new hall with modern exhibition facilities for the 5 Viking shipwrecks, while the old hall is to be preserved, although partly altered and used for public events. Another important feature of the winning proposal is the transformation of the surrounding landscape to withstand the regular flooding from the Roskilde fjord. ⏳ The funding to conserve the historic hall has not yet been secured: the approach to the future use of the original Viking Ship Hall and the recognition of the site’s cultural significance will be important factors as the project progresses. 🌐 More information: https://buff.ly/3Qhx9ar

🌍 Many European cities are characterized by a museum quarter and Rotterdam is no exception but can be considered a late bloomer. This year marks the centenary of the Land of Hoboken, which is a part of the city’s Museumpark. 🏛️ For a long time, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen was the cultural beacon in an area that used to be a private estate, but the early 1990s changed that with three consecutive openings that turned it into a cultural hotspot. 📍Kunsthal Rotterdam (1992) 📍Chabot Museum (1993) 📍Nieuwe Instituut (1993) 🌳 The Museumpark will be the central location of the annual Rotterdam Architectuur Maand taking place in June. A route that zigzags through the area takes visitors to various installations and interventions, including a bridge, a temporary observation tower, and an exhibition about the city’s green future. 🎂 As icing on the cake, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, celebrating its 175th anniversary and closed for renovations since 2019, will temporarily open its doors for five weeks. 📷 studio de Ronners #rotterdam #urbanism #urbandevelopment #architecture #culture #journalist #news

#towerbridgelondon #londonlife #london #londonwalk #giuseppealletto #art Tower Bridge London - Giuseppe Alletto art and travel The image of Tower Bridge’s grand castle-like Towers and raising bascules make it the most recognised bridge in the UK, possibly even in the world. However, many confuse it with London Bridge. An easy mistake to make, but one we can help you with! London Bridge is the oldest river crossing in London, bringing river and road traffic together. It was rebuilt multiple times, from timber to stone and concrete and steel. London Bridge was actually the sole crossing of the Thames until the construction of Putney Bridge in 1729. By 1870s, around a million people were living east of London Bridge, so getting across it could take hours. Tower Bridge came out of this need for a new river crossing, and was completed in 1894. Its Neo-Gothic design was chosen to blend with the Tower of London, a request by Queen Victoria. We clear up the mix below, with details about Tower Bridge and London Bridge, where these are located, the distance between them, and many more interesting facts of both structures. 1886 - The construction of Tower Bridge began on 22 April. 1894 - Tower Bridge was opened by the Prince and Princess of Wales with great celebrations, on 30 June. 1910 - The high-level Walkways, which were designed so that the public could still cross the Bridge when it was raised, were closed due to lack of use. 1912 - During a stunt, Frank McClean flew between the bascules and the high-level Walkways in his Short seaplane. He then proceeded to fly under at least three other bridges on his way to Westminster. 1949 - Tower Bride got a new roof following the Second World War, after suffering minor damages during the Blitz (7 September 1940 to 11 May 1941). Restoration works started in 1949 and lasted until 1952, with the original Welsh slate roof replaced by Westmorland Green slate, sourced from the Lake District. 1952 - The number 78 London bus driven by Albert Gunter on its way across the Bridge, had to leap from one bascule to the other when the Bridge began to rise. 1976 - Tower Bridge switches to electrified hydraulics, rather than the steam-driven system it was originally powered by. 1977 - Tower Bridge was painted red, white and blue to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee. The original colour of the Bridge was a chocolate brown colour. 1982 - Tower Bridge opened to the public as an attraction for the first time since 1910, with a permanent exhibition inside. 2012 - Playing a focal point in the London Olympics, this year saw the Olympic rings suspended from the Walkways, and James Bond and ‘the Queen’ fly through in a helicopter during the Opening Ceremony. 2019 - Tower Bridge turns 125 on 30 June with many activities throughout the month.

GRAND RAPIDS ART MUSEUM GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, USA (1983) https://lnkd.in/esSAhwYC This proposal revitalizes the city's downtown area by reusing a distinguished, but now vacant, former government building and by adapting a number of abandoned or underused neighboring structures for additional cultural functions. The main 1908 Beaux-Arts building is upgraded to meet codes and programmatic requirements. A relocation of the entrance from the closed side of the U-shaped building to the open court-yard establishes a direct physical relationship between the museum and its surroundings while creating a single, unified entrance. Covering the court-yard, a translucent inclined plane of stairs has an opening at its center that leads to the Grand Foyer which is a shared space for the different departments. Water descends slowly and evenly from the top of the stairway along a channel carved into the plane, leaving a clear pedestrian path for those walking up the stairs. This water is, in fact, the very water used for the air-conditioning system. In this way, the need for an unsightly cooling tower has been eliminated and this silent cascade becomes the focal point of the city's newest public space.
