My Favourite bit of Recruitment Trivia...
As we gear up for the holiday season, there's a fun little fact that all hiring managers should know: the first Monday of the New Year and the days between Christmas and New Year (aka 'Betwixtmas') are (on average) the busiest days all year for job applications.
Why? Because as the new year approaches, people are reflecting on their careers, setting resolutions, and eager to make that next big move. It’s the perfect time for job seekers to start fresh – and they definitely want to get ahead of the competition.
👉 Here’s the secret to capturing those top candidates: Start posting your job openings *before* the Christmas break!
Why? Because while others are waiting until after the New Year to post their jobs or start reviewing applications, YOU could be ahead of the game. By posting early, you can catch the wave of eager candidates applying during the Betwixtmas period and be ready to make hires as soon as the new year kicks off.

The cycle of needing experience to get hired, but needing a job to gain that experience, creates a classic "catch-22" scenario. It's a problem that not only discourages many but can also leave talent feeling undervalued and overlooked.
1. The "Experience Trap" Is Real:This paradox where employers ask for experience but are unwilling to give opportunities to gain that experience is one of the biggest hurdles for newcomers in the job market. Companies often seek candidates who have proven themselves, but how are people supposed to prove themselves without a chance to do so? This cycle leaves many talented individuals in limbo, and the job market ends up excluding many skilled but inexperienced applicants.
2. Skills vs. Experience:Employers often focus too heavily on past experience rather than skills or potential. What gets lost in this is that skills can often be transferred from other fields, or even learned on the job. Many recent graduates possess theoretical knowledge, fresh perspectives, and a willingness to learn, but these traits are often overlooked in favor of someone with more experience, even if their actual skills might be outdated.
3. The Role of Networking: In this broken system, networking often becomes the key to breaking through. Connections, referrals, or internal recommendations can open doors that a resume or application alone cannot. However, this further reinforces the feeling that talent is not the deciding factor, but rather who you know. This can be especially frustrating for those who don’t have those connections to rely on.
4. Employer Responsibility:Companies and industries must recognize that they need to invest in the next generation of workers. Instead of asking for years of experience for every role, they could develop more training programs, mentorship opportunities, and entry-level roles that give candidates a chance to learn and grow within the company. A little more patience and investment in talent can lead to long-term loyalty and stronger, more capable employees.
5. Self-Initiated Experience:In the age of online learning, freelancing, and side projects, there are ways to gain experience outside traditional jobs. Many people are creating their own opportunities by working on open-source projects, starting small businesses, volunteering, or gaining certifications in their field. While these alternatives may not be perfect solutions, they do allow individuals to gain practical experience and expand their portfolios.
