Industrial minerals – have they finally gone critical? No more the “Third World of the mining industry”? IMFORMED was both honoured and delighted to be invited to write the introduction to Mining Engineering annual review of industrial minerals in its July 2024 issue. 2023 might be considered the year that (finally) marked the decade of #industrialminerals criticality recognition. Bill Gleason, Editor, ME writes: “Each year, the July issue features the Industrial Minerals Review. I’d like to thank Mike O’Driscoll for his summary of the industrial minerals sectors. O’Driscoll keeps his finger on the pulse of this interesting, yet sometimes overlooked, sector of the mining industry. In his introduction to the section, O’Driscoll writes that while the sector has sometimes been called “the third world” of the industry, now might be the time for industrial minerals to gain the rightful recognition of their importance.” #criticalminerals #batteries #salt #fluorspar #silcasand #fracsand #mining #mineralexploration #mineralprocessing https://lnkd.in/e8AXWnXd

Director and Global Sector Leader - Mining and Minerals Processing at Stanton Chase: Executive Search Consultants
Australia often likes to compare itself to Canada across various metrics. Population size, landmass, Deer V Kangaroo - which tastes better and why. But if the Canadians pull this off, it will set the Australian mining industry back considerably. Right now we are slow to approve and to permit, enjoy banning things, and seem to want to wrap projects up with so much greentape that companies are prepared to walk away. The minerals extraction industry has always been global and capital has always been mobile. If we forget these fundamentals, some parts of the industry will simply seek alternaives and one of those may be Canada. #miningindustry #criticalminerals #stantonchase

B.C. is key to Canada's strategy for producing critical minerals essential for economic growth, with significant opportunities in mining, job creation, and contributions to the global supply chain. Despite robust potential and ongoing projects, the primary challenge remains the lengthy permitting process, which hinders the rapid development needed to capitalize on rising global demand for these minerals. Reas the full story here in the The Vancouver Sun, with words from Michael Goehring of the Mining Association of BC, John Steen of the The University of British Columbia, and Heather Exner-Pirot of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute #mining #naturalresources https://lnkd.in/gUtUbyJA

Canada has again ranked globally with five of the top 10 most attractive mining jurisdictions. Utah and Nevada topped the latest ranking, with Saskatchewan, Quebec, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador and Ontario all in the top 10. Saskatchewan was No. 3 for the second year in a row. Uncertainty around protected areas and disputed land claims are major areas of concern for Canadian jurisdictions. If we want to take advantage of this $800B+ opportunity in BC, and contribute to the energy transition, then it can't take 20 years to open a mine. And if we don't, then the minerals the world needs will likely come from countries with actors that may not have the same environmental and labour standards as the Governments of BC and Canada and the Canadian mining industry participants.
New critical mineral mines in BC could generate nearly $800B, says MABC BC's 16 proposed critical mineral mines, with $36B investment, 300K jobs, and $11B tax revenues, reach a pivotal stage, reveals analysis. “The realization of benefits from these critical mineral projects is dependent on B.C. having competitive fiscal and regulatory policies that will attract the investment necessary to grow and sustain the sector. The provincial government’s forthcoming critical minerals strategy is fundamental to these efforts,” Mining Association of BC CEO Michael Goehring said. #mining #miningnews #batterymetals #gold

Executives from Canadian and international silver mining producers operating in the country have appealed to government to recognise silver as a critical mineral. In a letter addressed to Energy and Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson, the executives outlined their reasoning behind their push for silver to be included on the list. For a mineral to be considered for the critical minerals list, it must: be essential to Canada’s economic or national security, be required for the national transition to a sustainable low-carbon and digital economy and contribute to Canada serving as a sustainable and strategic source of critical minerals for its international allies. In addition, critical minerals must satisfy both of the following criteria: the mineral’s supply is threatened, and the mineral has a reasonable likelihood of being produced in Canada. https://lnkd.in/dWv-vkyq

Mining - Morgan Stanley Predicts Massive Investments in U.S. Metals and Mining The US is heavily reliant on China for imported critical minerals, with 50% of domestic consumption depending on imports for 43 of 50 critical minerals. China's dominance in rare earth metals poses a national security threat, and the US faces a multi-decade decline in investment in its domestic mining and exploration industry. The US government is incentivizing domestic mining and separation sectors to boost domestic supply chains and reduce reliance on China. #mining #criticalminerals #china #morganstanley #edenam

"US permitting reform and other government incentives will likely act as a tailwind for the domestic mining industry through encouraging the development and helping mitigate the associated risks of building new mine supply," the analyst said. He said the big winner of "permitting reform" that is "geared toward promoting the development of mining projects" will be the "Junior Mining and Exploration industry." https://lnkd.in/eJJVEtjr #JuniorMining #CriticalMinerals #Exploration #Development

via Mining.com.au Trinex Minerals Limited has confirmed spodumene at the Ross Lake Lithium Project in Canada, upon conducting further analysis on selected rock chip samples taken from Dyke 75. The company reports 5 rock chip samples with elevated #lithium oxide (Li2O) assay results from 1.07% to 3.31% were selected for semi-quantitative X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) at SGS Laboratories in Lakefield, Ontario to confirm mineralogy of the samples and the presence of spodumene. Further, the XRD results confirmed that #spodumene is the dominant lithium-bearing mineral in all 5 samples, with up to 37.3% spodumene in sample D00179806.
