Enabling secure, responsible critical minerals supply chains by providing a platform for Industry and Government.

About us

The Critical Minerals Association was established in 2020 to bring industry, academia, and the government together to create secure and responsible critical minerals supply chains. The CMA brings together the entire value chain to promote greater integration, and to provide a platform for industry to come together and speak to the UK Government with a collective voice. As the Secretariat to the UK's All-Party Parliamentary Group on Critical Minerals, the CMA frequently organises events in Parliament on critical minerals. 📢𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗴𝗮𝗽 📢 A collaboration to bring critical minerals learning resources into UK schools has been awarded funding by the Department for Business and Trade. The joint project between Future Is Mine CIC and Minerals Matter, with industry support from SLR Consulting, will deliver teaching resources on critical minerals supply chains to UK schools from April 2025. Critical minerals are essential ingredients in our modern lives and central to economic growth. They are found in everything from our smartphones and laptops, to our cars, airplanes and clean energy technologies. Building resilient critical mineral supply chains in the UK is threatened by looming skills gaps, however, with the number of young people choosing to study geosciences in the UK falling steadily over the past decade. “The role of critical minerals in the advancement of society cannot be overstated, and these materials will only grow in importance as we develop more sustainable industries,” comments Jessica Roberts, Co-Founder of Future Is Mine. “Awareness of geosciences and mining is generally low. This funding from the Department for Business & Trade enables us to bring fantastic resources into schools and showcase the role critical minerals play in building a more sustainable world.” “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to share these carefully resourced sessions developed in partnership with geoscience specialists,” Loren Crisp, Co-Founder of Future Is Mine, comments. “The activities support teachers to ensure pupils develop a greater depth of understanding in this field and learn about the wealth of career opportunities that they may not be aware of.” Ben Lepley of SLR Consulting adds: “This exciting opportunity allows us to build on great work done by the European Union EIT RawMaterialsRISBriefcase of Mineral Applications project that ran for several years. Our project aims to take this concept and grow a network of resources across the UK and inspire future generations to get involved in this essential industry required for the energy transition.” “Minerals Matter are delighted to be supporting this project, which will provide valuable resources for our volunteer ambassadors to use when engaging with young people in education settings. It is so important to share information about the critical nature of the industry with our future workforce, and these resources will provide an interactive way to do this,” comments Hannah Higley, Future Careers Manager at Minerals Matter. The critical minerals resources will be available to schools from April 2025. For more information or to enquire about using these resources in your school, contact info@futureismine.co.uk and info@minerals-matter.co.uk #Outreach #CriticalMinerals #Education #SkillsGap

Just over a month ago, The Risk Advisory Group assisted in the organization of the first compliance-focused panel at the 4th Annual Conference at the Critical Minerals Association (UK). 🤝🌍♻️ Thank you to my colleague Huw Charles who aptly spoke at the panel about the complementarity of anti-corruption and ESG investigations, as well as other panel speakers from such as David Liebscher from National Crime Agency (NCA), it was a fascinating exchange. This would not be possible without Eileen Maes, a former LSE Department of Government classmate of mine, who orchestrated the whole conference. I remember attending conferences as a student with Eileen, and it is incredibly rewarding to now be in positions where we can join powers to shine a spotlight on topics we think should be talked about more.

Organising the CMA (UK)’s 4th Annual Conference was more demanding than previous years, but far more rewarding. Hearing from Dr Shobhan Dhir from the International Energy Agency (IEA) on their visionary research; Dr Sarah-Jane Gill from the UK Space Agency on the potential of space mining; David Leibscher from the National Crime Agency (NCA) on some of the anti-bribery cases he has worked; and Julian Hetherington from the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK on the state of innovation, as well as a powerhouse panel on building a competitive European continent, featuring Ludivine Wouters, Margery (Marge) Ryan, Jane Joughin, Philipa Varris and Sanela Karic. The team and I were also honoured to welcome the Chairs of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Critical Minerals - Noah Law MP, Perran Moon MP and Baroness Lindsay Northover - to our conference, who gave opening remarks at our breakfast reception. But my personal favourite had to be collaborating with my dear friend and former LSE classmate Adriana Svitkova to deliver a joint panel with The Risk Advisory Group on transparency, compliance and anti-corruption in the mining industry. If we want to revolutionise our economy for sustainability, it starts with how we extract. A big thank you to everyone who attended, and to the most amazing team who pulled this all together - Kirsty Benham, Jeff Townsend, Lily Dickson, Becca Dawn K., Enzo Satkuru-Granzella, as well as Sarah Léonardon and Milad Yousofi at the Royal College of Physicians. Labour MP for Croydon West. Minister of State at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and the Department for Business and Trade.

Critical minerals are essential to delivering economic growth and powering the UK’s modern sectors - like AI and clean energy. But global demand is high – making it vital that the UK builds resilient, diverse and responsible supply chains. That’s why I've been in Saudi Arabia this week for the Future Minerals Forum, kicking off with a roundtable hosted by Saudi Arabian Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, Bandar Alkhorayef, where we discussed initiatives for critical minerals, including supply chains and developing Centres of Excellence.    I also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Critical Minerals with Minister Alkhorayef. The MoU will be backed by an action plan which will identify potential partnerships and investments and be developed jointly with the UK and Saudi Arabia. While here, I engaged extensively with industry on the UK’s plans for a new critical minerals strategy. This included meeting with Anglo American CEO Duncan Wanblad to discuss the Woodsmith project in the UK - and I learnt about the exciting work and objectives of some of the 16 exhibiting UK companies that I met too.   It was also great to meet His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, Saudi Arabian Minister of Energy, and His Excellency Bandar Alkhorayef, Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources. We discussed industrial trade and investment between our nations, and the great opportunities in place.   Back home, I’ll continue this government’s mission to forge lasting connections as we work hard to deliver stable supplies of critical minerals long into the future.

Metals account for 10% of global material extraction, and will play a key role in the scale-up of energy transition infrastructure and the electrification of the transport and mobility system – critical mineral demand is expected to grow 4-6x by 2040. 🌎ICMM is proud to have contributed to World Economic Forum’s ‘Nature Positive: Role of the Mining and Metals Sector’ Report. Developed in collaboration with Oliver Wyman, the Report outlines the sector’s key impacts and dependencies on nature, and the priority actions corporate leaders can take to halt and reverse nature loss. By taking these five priority actions, the mining and metals sector could unlock more than $430 billion of additional value by 2030: 🌱 Transform operations across the mine life cycle by avoiding, then reducing, land pollution and emissions impacts, and restoring in line with the mitigation hierarchy. 💧 Improve water stewardship by avoiding then reducing, water abstraction, use and pollution in mining operations and landscapes. 🔄 Expand circularity and source responsibly by embracing standards and transparency, engaging with suppliers and customers. 🌳 Restore and regenerate landscapes by supporting nature conservation and restoration with local communities. 🤝 Transform policy systems and collaborate across sectors.
