Today, on International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2024, we celebrate the remarkable achievements of women in science. According to a report by UNESCO, only 33% of the world's researchers are women, despite representing 45-55% of the global population. In the UK, women are still significantly underrepresented in science and technology fields. Less than 30% of scientific researchers worldwide are female, and only 35% of university students in STEM fields are women. Despite this, women have made significant gains in increasing their representation in science in recent years. As we honour the contributions of women in science, let's continue to work towards gender equity and support the advancement of women in STEM fields. Let’s ensure we get a The Labour Party to help make it happen! #WomenInScience #February11 #DiversityEquityAndInclusion

Dive into the captivating world of STEM with our latest blog article in collaboration with Girls in Global! 🌟 For far too long, women have been underrepresented in STEM, both in academia and industry. Despite their significant contributions, historical records show shocking figures as low as 0.5% in representation. But this isn't due to a lack of talent or passion. Instead, it's a result of systemic marginalization and the overlooking of their incredible achievements in the field. This article, part ouf our gender mainstreaming campaign, sheds light on this pressing issue and emphasizes the importance of recognizing and celebrating women's contributions in STEM. It's a call to action for us all to champion diversity and inclusivity in these critical fields. ✍️ Julia Accardo & Fortunate Akol Read the full article here: https://wix.to/nQ3gNxZ Let's amplify the voices of women in STEM and inspire the next generation of innovators! 💡 #WomenInSTEM #DiversityInSTEM #NewBlogPost #girlsinglobal #eigid #gmcampaign

Today, on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we honor the incredible contributions of women in the field and highlight the importance of gender equality in scientific pursuits. From pioneering discoveries to groundbreaking innovations, women continue to play a crucial role in shaping the world of science. This day serves as a reminder of the challenges women have overcome and the barriers they still face in pursuing careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). It's an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of female scientists, applaud their resilience, and encourage the next generation of girls to explore their passion for science. Despite progress, gender disparities persist in STEM fields. By promoting inclusivity and dismantling stereotypes, we can create an environment where women and girls feel empowered to pursue their scientific aspirations. Let us acknowledge and support the remarkable women who have paved the way, while also inspiring future generations to contribute their unique perspectives to the world of science. Together, we can foster an environment where diversity thrives, ensuring that the scientific community benefits from the talents and perspectives of everyone, regardless of gender. In 2023, women comprised 29.2% of STEM careers, meaning that in 4 years, that number only increased by 2.2%. This is not to be negative but to bring awareness of how underrepresented women are in STEM. As we recognize International Women's Day, let's also acknowledge our women in STEM and how many have paved the way for someone like me to be in the field to make a difference in the lives of others. To all the women in STEM, let's work to positively influence the young women wanting to enter the field and increase the numbers! #InternationalWomensDay #WomenInSTEM #STEM #Sitero

Yesterday was International Women and Science Day, and so I would like to recall one of UNESCO's reflections: "Women and girls represent half of the world's population and therefore also half of its potential. Gender equality, in addition to being a fundamental human right, is essential for peaceful societies with full human potential and sustainable development". Science is one more area of social development, so let us support women to choose their path with full equality of opportunity, also in scientific disciplines!
Despite recent progress, women remain underrepresented in the scientific field. Closing the gender gap in STEM is essential for fostering diversity, innovation, and equitable opportunities. Let's actively work towards a future where all aspiring scientists, regardless of gender, have equal opportunities to thrive and contribute to groundbreaking discoveries. “Contrary to misconceptions, the observed differences in women’s participation in science in various countries and scientific disciplines indicate that the gender gap in science is not a result of innate differences between men and women or a country's economic status. Instead, they reflect a complex interplay of societal factors and systemic barriers that hinder girls and women's access to scientific careers.”….. “These barriers include social, cultural and gender norms that guide expectations and roles, low levels of self-efficacy, a lack of visible role models, underrepresentation in leadership roles, poorly qualified teachers and unsupportive learning environments, and inadequate professional structures and work cultures. “ These words encapsulate the essence of my Master’s Thesis at Maastricht University — a motivation to challenge preconceived notions, biases, and societal norms deeply rooted in our collective society. My purpose is to highlight the effort of women who are raising their voices and taking actions to inspire and support the next generation of women in tech as role models and guides. I aspire to illustrate how their singular efforts possess the potential to catalyze collective empowerment, reframing the narrative that has perpetuated our society and forging new paths forward. In this journey, I am privileged to encounter remarkable and inspiring women from every corner of the globe, each with her own story of resilience and victories. Espree Devora 🎙 Evie Dineva Kellie Kwarteng Lauren McGoodwin Jacqueline Corley Tori Dunlap Mandi Woodruff-Santos Daliana Liu Ariana The Techie (she/her) and many others. These efforts serve as reminders of the imperative to dismantle entrenched power imbalances and societal biases. We must promote new narratives that advocate for the equal representation and inclusion of women at every stage of technology creation, production, and deployment, ensuring equal representation for everyone. Initiatives such as UNESCO’s dedicated to fostering supportive ecosystems for women, remind us that we have the opportunity to reorchestrate narratives that have dominated our society and catalyze meaningful change. The moment to act is now. Together, we have the power to redefine norms, ensuring equality in representation and opportunity.
