Issues pertaining to Waste Management are burgeoning in India. No amount of governmental action is sufficient, unless it is supplemented by individual and community efforts. In the recent past, several developments around solid waste management have taken place, especially with regard to the generation of bulk #wastes. The urban local bodies, which are tasked with solid waste management are developing systems to ensure waste segregation at source, streaming of different kinds of wastes into different channels etc. With this backdrop, we present our latest #RuleSutra update pertaining to the responsibilities of the bulk waste generators under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐝 Kasturba Nagar, Chennai, are composting their own wet waste instead of throwing it away! This innovative project, inspired by a similar one in Bengaluru, has resulted in a 30 kg reduction in daily waste production, three cross streets house commercial establishments. Of the 2,500 homes, nearly 1,500 do 100% source segregation of waste. I'm particularly impressed by the 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲-𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡, with residents taking ownership of their waste management. the project's success highlights the potential of decentralized composting solutions to address waste management challenges in urban areas. It's a model that could be replicated in other communities around the world, promoting sustainability and community engagement. This #WorldEnvironmentDay, we are proud to share our progress in conserving natural resources and promoting sustainable community practices. Our collaborative water conservation and waste management efforts foster a healthier, more resilient environment for future generations. The watershed and environmental conservation projects at Kolar, Hyderabad and Salem implemented by the S M Sehgal Foundation and Bala Vikasa Social Service Society, have significantly improved water storage, boosted agricultural productivity through silt distribution, regenerative horticulture while helping reduce overall water consumption through drip irrigation systems. Additionally, our project teams have educated farmers on scientific irrigation practices to ensure sustainable water usage. Under the waste management project, two 1250-litre capacity composters were installed to transform organic waste into valuable compost and encourage household waste segregation. To further proliferate awareness on waste management, a vibrant mural has been painted on the Bangalore walls with the community's support, urging people to reduce, reuse, and recycle for a cleaner city. These initiatives exemplify First American (India)’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and inspire our community to embrace eco-friendly practices. Sad part of our history and present is that we are still not in the position to utilize solid waste, we are a huge country and we can take advantage of this volume by generate biofuels and electricity from these sources. #sustainabilitychallange
