💭 Innovation, capacity, capability and productivity were key themes of Government Property 2024, as senior civil servants discussed and debated the Government’s Property Strategy, two years on from its launch. Louise Daville, our director of public sector strategy, says: “Sessions during the day covered the role of government property and how as industry professionals we can reframe what value means to people, place, and productivity across our public services. How small incremental percentage improvements deliver better productivity across the wider public estate.” Our Space to innovate research suggests that investing in spaces designed to foster innovation could lead to 726,000 new jobs and a £44 billion boost to UK GDP. Speakers highlighted a number of ISG projects as successful in delivering the key aims of government, including: 23 Stephenson Street Birmingham, Government Property Agency ➡️ https://ow.ly/onHA50TmJAO New Prisons Programme, Ministry of Justice UK ⤵️ https://ow.ly/2K6e50TmJz5 Prison expansion programme schemes, Ministry of Justice UK ➡️ https://ow.ly/9cta50TmJnz 📝 Read our report to see how innovation could unlock productivity: https://ow.ly/Pg5350TmJoC #Spacetoinnovate #Innovation #GovernmentPropertyStrategy #PublicSector #Construction

Stop state-sponsored torture: ask your federal representatives to support the End Solitary Confinement Act #ESCA Solitary confinement inflicts devastating suffering on the human spirit, triggering psychological deterioration and deaths by suicide. We need YOUR help now to prevent our federal prisons and detention centers from becoming more dangerous and inhumane. We’ve made progress since #ESCA was first introduced in 2021 - congressional hearings, federal oversight, and a growing awareness that there are far more effective and humane alternatives - but the numbers are still shocking: more than 122,000 people are in solitary on any given day in the US. Join the fight to #EndSolitaryConfinement. Visit www.endtorturenow.org to contact your U.S. Senators & House Representatives using our simple form TODAY. 👀This week in Minnesota… Bipartisan collaboration between states! The Minnesota House Public Safety and Finance Committee held an informational hearing to discuss corrections issues and explore innovative solutions. Led by the committee Chair, Rep. Kelly Moller, the group heard from representatives of various state correctional agencies, directly impacted individuals, and leaders from other states about their experiences and promising practices. Oklahoma Secretary of Public Safety, Tricia Everest, shared how Oklahoma is modernizing its justice system and transforming the culture of corrections in one of the most conservative states in the nation! She highlighted the improvements they’ve made that have resulted in the closing of four prisons. Oklahoma has made several strides in aligning its focus on starting rehabilitation at the point of entry. 👏 As Secretary Everest said⤵️ “If you give [incarcerated people] their humanity, their likelihood of success on the outside will improve. It helps workers too; all lives will be improved.” We love seeing the states we work in come together to collectively find solutions to some of the nation's most pressing justice reform issues! #CriminalJusticeReform #PublicSafetySolutions #JANFoundation

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children now more than ever need our support and care, not cages and adult sentences. But the QLD Crisafulli Government has rammed through regressive laws that will send more children to prison for longer and override human rights. These discriminatory laws will see even more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children locked up in overcrowded, unsafe prisons, and kids as young as ten facing harsher sentences like life detention. Queensland already holds the shameful title of locking up the most children in the country. The Crisafulli Government must stop playing political football with children's lives, and instead listen to communities who know what works. We need to #RaiseTheAge, address systemic racism and discriminatory policing and properly invest in Aboriginal-led preventative and early intervention services. Punishing trauma without addressing its root causes only deepens the cycle of pain, #retraumatisation and reoffending. In The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van der Kolk, we learn about the profound impact of early childhood trauma on future future wellbeing, and how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), can lead to cycles of retraumatisation and reoffending. Adverse early childhood experiences such as childhood incarceration can lead to cycles of retraumatisation by: ❌Disrupting attachment patterns and emotional regulation ❌Promoting disassociation and detachment that can prevent them from recognising the signs of abusive relationships later in life ❌Encouraging hyperarousal and the erosion of conflict resolution skills ❌Inability to differentiate healthy from harmful behaviour ❌Reinforcing a sense of helplessness ❌Perpetuating intergenerational trauma Together, let’s stop playing “political football” with children’s lives, and adopt a trauma informed approach that views youth offending as a product of dysfunctional attachment styles and adverse childhood experiences. Only by addressing these root causes can we help children break free from cycles of pain and create pathways to healing, accountability and growth. #breakthecycle #youth
