An unexpected hospital stay threw all my plans into chaos. Chaos is OK. Life is chaos. Healthy living means learning how to navigate, enjoy and thrive in the unexpected. Incarceration in a hospital (which is how it felt) sure was unexpected. One of the good things that came out of the experience was a reminder of the power of Self With Others as a way of seeing and navigating the world. From being able to identify the source of my discomfort, through choosing where most efficiently to direct attention, becoming present with the wonder of what's happening (even if it's not exactly pleasant), to accessing resources of deep inner calm amid the stress and overwhelm of a medical 'situation'. Self-With-Others helped me with all of these things. I didn't choose to go to hospital. I did choose how I would find my way through, and learn from, the experience. I am immensely grateful for that. For the last few months I've been running a test of an email sequence to guide people deep into an understanding of Self-With-Others. It's getting great responses from the group of 20 people round the world. Eventually I'll offer that sequence more widely. However my recent hospital experience convinced me that I want to offer a shorter, more accessible and - above all - free introduction to Self-With-Others. It helps me a lot. Every day. Walking into a patient's room to find them in extreme pain and upset can be a daunting experience. But what do you do when you need to have a conversation with them about quitting a dangerous behavior that is literally making them "feel better" but is killing them? As a healthcare professional, I've learned to stop and ask myself a crucial question in these situations: "Where was I in the story?" By understanding where the patient is coming from and what is currently uncomfortable for them, I can relate my message in a way that makes them feel comfortable. This approach has allowed me to insert myself into their life story in a positive and helpful manner, which has helped save lives. It's a powerful reminder that sometimes, the most effective way to help someone is to understand their story and figure out how to insert yourself into it. Confession #60: Hi, I’m a hijra (eunuch) and I’m 26 years old. Until I was 12, everything was normal. My parents loved me, and my family treated me just like any other kid because my parents kept the truth hidden from everyone. But then, one day, the news spread like wildfire. The entire neighborhood found out, and soon many hijra communities started approaching my parents, wanting to take me with them. Coming from a very orthodox family, my parents didn’t know how to protect me. After about 5-6 months of back and forth, they reluctantly agreed to hand me over, believing it would offer me a better future. I didn’t understand what was happening to me. Suddenly, I felt very different. When I finally went with the community, I was taught their culture, rules, and regulations. Later, I found myself in multiple relationships and went through many difficult experiences that are hard to describe. Those initial years completely changed my life. I tried to continue my studies and participated in the activities of my community, which I am still doing. I want to ask the people of this country: why aren’t we treated like other genders? Why can’t we get admission to colleges, find jobs, or start our own businesses like anyone else? What did I do wrong, just because I was born different? Do I have to face this for my entire life? I also want to live with my family and lead a happy life. Progress in Therapy Takes Time..... As a therapist, I have come to appreciate the level of patience and skills required to support clients on their journey. Recently, after a few months of weekly sessions, a client shared a touching realization with me: "If I keep giving life the opportunity, it will never become what I want. But now, I feel proud in a new way. I'm ready to learn and see myself as a kind, caring, and compassionate person. I strive to be good and considerate, without causing harm. I am ready to learn and learned that people can no longer take undue advantage of me." She has made remarkable progress in differentiating between what she wants and does not want in interpersonal relationships. She understands and practices healthy boundaries, and the activities we've worked on between sessions have helped her reflect and apply these insights in her daily life. Hearing this was a truly blissful moment for me :) It’s these moments of genuine progress and self-awareness that make this work so fulfilling. Have you experienced similar moments in your practice? you know therapy is harmful to you when... 1. The therapist is working out of their scope of practise. We need to have valid academic transcripts to practice anything. 2. When they start giving you advice. We simply don't do that. Advising is not our job. 3. When they compel the clients/patients to disclose things before they are comfortable sharing. Some sessions are uncomfortable but we don't compel. 4. When they ask for promoting their services from their clients. Our relationship is one to one not one to many. 5. When they promote their competence without relevant qualification or certification. Please don't trust ads. 6. When you start hearing other clients' stories in your sessions. I mean where is the limit to confidentiality? 7. When you hear the "I discussed your case with..." statement from the therapist without taking your consent before disclosing your information. There is "informed consent" for literally anything. 8. When you observe that the therapist themself is reacting to your information frequently instead of stopping and responding to you. We all have our triggers but therapists can manage them well. however if your therapist is unable to manage them, then probably they are not the right ones to discuss issues with. #therapy #redflages #therapeuticrelationship #therapygoals #client #health #growth
