This significant project, with an annual production capacity of 1,750,000 metric tonnes, solidifies the company's position as Malaysia's second-largest methanol producer after PETRONAS Chemical. With the commissioning of Sarawak Petchem's methanol plant, Malaysia has emerged as the leading methanol producer in the Asia Pacific region. The availability of methanol in Malaysia, particularly in Sarawak, is expected to drive further investments and stimulate the production of other downstream products. This state-of-the-art facility will produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel/hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) to cater to the growing demands of the global aviation and transportation industry by tapping each partner’s expertise.   The biorefinery will process a staggering 650,000 tons of raw materials annually, contributing significantly to a greener future. PETRONAS, Enilive and Euglena Greenlight Construction of #Biorefinery in Malaysia Malaysia's state energy firm Petronas, Italy's Enilive (a subsidiary of Eni), and Japanese company Euglena have reached the final investment decision (FID) to develop a biorefinery which will be located within Petronas’ Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) in Johor, Malaysia. The three companies will establish a joint venture in #Malaysia to construct and operate the biorefinery. The construction of the biorefinery, targeted to be operational in the second half of 2028, is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of this year, and upon completion, will have the capability to process about 650,000 t/y of raw materials to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO), and bio-#naphtha, the companies said. The wastes and residue feedstocks for the biorefinery will comprise used vegetable oils, animal fats, waste from the processing of vegetable oils, and other biomass including microalgae oils. Petronas’ vice president, Refining, Trading and Marketing, Ahmad Adly Alias said: “Together with our partners Enilive and Euglena, we will leverage each other’s strengths and expertise to advance the global bio-based economy and deliver affordable, accessible cleaner energy solutions to customers worldwide, particularly for Asia Pacific.
